The Molecular Path Approaching the Active Site in Catalytic Metal-Organic Frameworks

Ana E. Platero-Prats et al.

Summary: The study used in situ synchrotron X-ray scattering analysis to evaluate the binding sites for reagent and product molecules near catalytic Ni-oxo clusters in NU-1000 with different surface functionalization, showing a correlation with ethylene hydrogenation activity. The most active catalyst had ethylene reagent molecules binding close to the catalytic clusters only at temperatures near the experimentally observed onset of catalysis, while ethane product molecules favored a different binding location.

Solvent Impregnated Polymers Loaded with Liquid-Like Nanoparticle Organic Hybrid Materials for Enhanced Kinetics of Direct Air Capture and Point Source CO2 Capture

Guanhe Rim et al.

Summary: Hybrid CO2 capture materials known as solvent impregnated polymers (SIPs) have been developed to improve the capture kinetics of high viscosity water-lean solvents. By incorporating liquid-like nanoparticle organic hybrid materials functionalized with polyethylenimine (NOHM-I-PEI) into a shell material and UV-curing it, gas-permeable solid sorbents with uniform loading (NPEI-SIPs) are produced. The CO2 capture kinetics of NPEI-SIPs have shown a significant increase due to the SIP design, providing a larger interfacial surface area for CO2 adsorption. The optimal loading of NOHM-I-PEI and sorption temperature were found to be around 49 wt% and 50 degrees Celsius, respectively, while NPEI-SIPs exhibited good thermal stability over multiple temperature swing cycles. Under humid conditions, NPEI-SIPs demonstrated high CO2 loadings for different concentrations, suggesting their effectiveness in capturing CO2 from various sources.

Low-Temperature H2S/CO2/CH4 Separation in Mixed-Matrix Membranes Containing MFU-4

Qihui Qian et al.

Summary: Mixed-matrix membranes containing CO2-selective metal-organic frameworks have shown potential in improving energy efficiency for natural gas and biogas separation. A specific MMM system with a 6FDA-Durene polymer and an MFU-4 MOF demonstrated enhanced CO2/CH4 gas separation performance at low temperatures, primarily due to the higher polarizability and smaller size of CO2 compared to CH4. Additionally, the hybrid membrane showed competitive performance for H2S separation compared to literature materials designed specifically for this purpose.

New chemistry for enhanced carbon capture: beyond ammonium carbamates

Alexander C. Forse et al.

Summary: Although aqueous amine scrubbers are effective at removing CO2, they have limitations, thus the exploration of new CO2 capture chemistry such as ionic liquids and metal-organic frameworks is necessary. These new approaches may offer advantages including higher sorption capacities and lower regeneration energies, but further research is needed for practical applications.
