State of Health Estimation Methods for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Gulzat Nuroldayeva et al.

Summary: Contemporary lithium-ion batteries require effective management to extend service life and increase reliability and safety. Currently, the state of batteries is determined using the state of charge (SOC) and the state of health (SOH) parameters. Estimating SOH of batteries can be done through experimental, model-based, and machine learning methods. Experimental methods are not suitable for commercial cases, while model-based methods explain battery processes through differential equations. Machine learning methods use past ageing data to predict battery health. All methods for assessing the SOH of lithium-ion batteries have their pros and cons.

In-situ X-ray tomographic imaging study of gas and structural evolution in a commercial Li-ion pouch cell

Wenjia Du et al.

Summary: Gas generation within Li-ion batteries can reduce their cycle lifetime, and high-energy X-ray tomography can be used to study gas evolution and structural changes non-destructively. Observations on deformation caused by gas agglomeration and quantification of gas distribution provide insights into cell degradation mechanisms.

Automated Defect Recognition for Welds Using Simulation Assisted TFM Imaging with Artificial Intelligence

Thulsiram Gantala et al.

Summary: This paper utilizes AI algorithms to automate the process of creating a large synthetic Total Focusing Method (TFM) imaging dataset and for automated defect-recognition (ADR) in butt-welds. Six types of imaging datasets are created using three different approaches, including FE analysis, DCGAN, and noise extraction from experimental measurements. The use of convolutional neural networks (CNN) in object detection and classification enhances the reliability and efficiency of weld quality assurance, with the ADR model achieving an mAP value of 85% on the hybrid weld TFM dataset with noise.

Microcapsule mechanics: Quasi-static compressive properties and the effect of liquid core

Yunxiao Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, poly urea-formaldehyde (PUF) shelled microcapsules with paraffin oil were selected for experiments. The results showed that the liquid core has a significant effect on the mechanical properties of a microcapsule, especially at large deformations. The relationship between the rising hydrostatic pressure and the structural deformation was found to nicely follow a quadratic function.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

Shangshang Wang et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the application of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), analyzes the error structure and sensitivity of impedance measurements in the reduction of ferricyanide process, and provides guidelines for experimental design. The relevance of accuracy contour plots to wiring and instrumentation selection is highlighted, as well as the importance of the Kramers-Kronig relations to data validation and analysis.
