Theoretical Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Low-Valent Carbon Species: A ∼6 eV Range of Ionization Potentials among Carbenes, Ylides, and Carbodiphosphoranes

Abhik Ghosh et al.

Summary: High-quality density functional theory calculations show that the ionization potentials (IPs) of neutral, low-valent carbon compounds, such as carbenes, ylides, and carbones, have a range of nearly 6 eV. Adiabatic IPs as low as 5.5 +/- 0.1 eV are predicted for carbodiphosphoranes (CDPs), which are lower than those of phosphorus and sulfur ylides. In contrast, N-heterocyclic carbenes have IPs around 8.0 eV, while simple singlet carbenes range from about 9.0 eV to over 11.0 eV.

Air-Stable Thermoluminescent Carbodicarbene-Borafluorenium Ions

Kimberly K. Hollister et al.

Summary: This article reports the synthesis, molecular structures, and optical properties of a new class of air-stable borenium ions stabilized by the strongly donating carbodicarbene ligand. These ions exhibit thermoluminescence in solution and increased quantum yields in the solid state, with the ability to emit white light at lower temperatures. The effect of anion size and ligand rotation on the optical properties is also investigated, complemented by theoretical analysis of the excited-state dynamics.

Libo Xiang et al.

Summary: A facile strategy for preparing halogenated cationic B=C-centered organoboron analogues has been reported, involving the reaction between carbodiphosphoranes (CDPs) and aryl dihaloboranes. Structural comparison of halogen and alkoxy derivatives, along with detailed computational studies, confirms the polarized double dative bonding nature of the central B=C double bonds.
