Development and validation of a machine learning-based prediction model for near-term in-hospital mortality among patients with COVID-19

Prathamesh Parchure et al.

Summary: This study developed and validated a model for predicting near-term in-hospital mortality among COVID-19 patients using a machine learning algorithm. The model utilized time-series inpatient data including vital signs, laboratory data, and ECG results. The results showed that the model had good performance and could reliably predict near-term mortality. Implementing such a model in hospitals can improve care and align clinical decisions with prognosis for critically ill COVID-19 patients.

Clinician involvement in research on machine learning-based predictive clinical decision support for the hospital setting: A scoping review

Jessica M. Schwartz et al.

Summary: The study describes the involvement of clinical experts in the development of predictive CDSS, with experts most prevalent at the beginning and late stages of system design. Nearly half of the clinical experts are involved in verifying the clinical correctness or relevance of the model during the development and evaluation of machine learning models.

Association of Clinician Diagnostic Performance With Machine Learning-Based Decision Support Systems A Systematic Review

Baptiste Vasey et al.

Summary: This systematic review found limited evidence of the association between the use of ML-based CDSSs and improved clinician diagnostic performance. Most studies had a small number of participants, were at high or unclear risk of bias, and lacked consideration for human factors. Caution should be taken when assessing the potential of ML to enhance human diagnostic performance, and more comprehensive evaluation is needed before implementing ML-based CDSSs in clinical settings.
