'I'm usually being my own doctor': women's experiences of managing polycystic ovary syndrome in Canada

Summary: This study explores the lived experiences of women managing PCOS and the barriers and facilitators they encounter in their management journeys. The results show that most participants were frustrated with the level of involvement and information provision from their doctors. Key recommendations are identified for the provision of care to younger and older patients with PCOS.

Summary: This study investigated the perceptions and experiences of PCOS diagnosis in Canada. The survey found that many patients were dissatisfied with the provided information about PCOS, lifestyle management, and medical therapy at the time of diagnosis. Delayed diagnosis and multiple doctor visits were common. Interview participants encountered doctors who lacked knowledge on PCOS, dismissed concerns, and did not provide necessary medical information. Younger patients often did not understand the significance of symptoms during adolescence, leading to delayed diagnoses. The study concludes that greater education on PCOS for physicians, particularly in primary care, is needed, and greater awareness of PCOS is necessary for the general population.
