Wearable Sensor-Based Detection of Influenza in Presymptomatic and Asymptomatic Individuals

Dorota S. Temple et al.

Summary: In this study, wearable electrocardiogram sensors integrated with accelerometers were used to monitor participants, and a semisupervised machine learning algorithm successfully detected infections in both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals, on average 23 hours before symptom onset. This research shows promise for early detection of respiratory illnesses, but further validation is needed in larger and more diverse cohorts.

Use of a Wearable Biosensor to Study Heart Rate Variability in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Its Relationship to Disease Severity

Seon-Cheol Park et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between heart rate variability (HRV) and various phenotypic measures that relate to health and functional status in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and to demonstrate the feasibility of measuring HRV via a chest-worn wearable biosensor in COPD patients. The study found that HRV was associated with COPD severity, class of bronchodilator therapy prescribed, and patient reported outcomes. Additionally, reduced HRV was observed in COPD patients receiving inhaled beta-sympathomimetic agonist and muscarinic antagonists.

Real-time infection prediction with wearable physiological monitoring and AI to aid military workforce readiness during COVID-19

Bryan Conroy et al.

Summary: This study developed a prototype tool for an early infection warning service using wearable physiological monitoring and predictive models. The tool delivers continuously updated scores of infection risk for SARS-CoV-2 and showed the feasibility of real-time risk prediction. Data from 9381 Department of Defense personnel wearing Garmin and Oura devices were used, with 491 COVID-19 positive cases identified. The predictive algorithm had an AUC of 0.82 in identifying infection before diagnostic testing.

Influence of Artefact Correction and Recording Device Type on the Practical Application of a Non-Linear Heart Rate Variability Biomarker for Aerobic Threshold Determination

Bruce Rogers et al.

Summary: This study suggests that recording artefacts, correction methods, and device bias can have an impact on the measurement of heart rate variability biomarkers during aerobic exercise. Artefacts ranging from 1% to 3% introduced small but discernible biases in raw measurements, while a 6% artefact led to proportional bias. Despite these biases, the average bias in determining the aerobic threshold was within 1 bpm across all artefact levels and correction methods. Additionally, device-related biases were found to be possible, but in the opposite direction as artefact-related biases.

Performance of seven consumer sleep-tracking devices compared with polysomnography

Evan D. Chinoy et al.

Summary: This study tested the performance of various consumer sleep-tracking devices against polysomnography, with most devices performing well in detecting sleep and wake, while Garmin devices performed poorly. Sleep stage assessments were inconsistent, and devices tended to perform worse on nights with poorer quality sleep or disruptions.

Wearable Devices Suitable for Monitoring Twenty Four Hour Heart Rate Variability in Military Populations

Katrina Hinde et al.

Summary: Heart rate variability (HRV) measurements provide insights into the autonomic nervous system and sympathetic activity balance. High HRV indicates good adaptability, while low HRV may signal fatigue, overtraining, or health issues. The Polar H10 stands out as the most accurate wearable device currently available, although it requires additional cost for data extraction without using an app.

Analysis of Gender Differences in HRV of Patients with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Using Mobile-Health Technology

Lluis Capdevila et al.

Summary: This study revealed that male ME/CFS patients showed higher symptom scores and fatigue ratings compared to control men, but no differences were found in HRV parameters. There was a negative correlation between ME/CFS symptomatology and cardiac variability in male patients. Female ME/CFS patients displayed a decreased HRV pattern compared to male patients.

Demonstrating the Applicability of Smartwatches in PM2.5 Health Impact Assessment

Ming-Chien Mark Tsou et al.

Summary: The study in Taiwan found good correlations in heart rate measurements between smartwatches and certified medical devices, with a close similarity in health damage coefficients obtained from the two types of devices. This suggests that smartwatches can be useful complements to certified medical devices in assessing the health impacts of PM2.5 and can be replicated in developing countries.

Toshikazu Shinba et al.

Summary: This study used linear discriminant analysis of HRV indices to determine the role of autonomic measurement in the return-to-work process for MDD patients. The sensitivity was high, indicating the importance of normal HRV for successful return, while the low specificity suggested that other factors may also play a role in the outcome of reinstatement.

Wearable sensor data and self-reported symptoms for COVID-19 detection

Giorgio Quer et al.

Summary: The study developed a smartphone app that combines smartwatch and activity tracker data to monitor COVID-19 infection continuously. The combination of symptom and sensor data showed better performance in distinguishing COVID-19 positive from negative cases compared to models that consider symptoms alone. This suggests that passive data collection from personal sensors may complement virus testing methods.
