Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

Public knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding antibiotics use in Punjab, Pakistan: a cross-sectional study

Ali Hassan Gillani et al.

Summary: The study found a significant proportion of inappropriate antibiotics use among the general population of Punjab, Pakistan, including a lack of accurate knowledge about antibiotics and a high rate of self-medication without a doctor's prescription. Being married, having higher knowledge about antibiotics use, ever purchasing antibiotics without a doctor's prescription, and storing antibiotics at home were significantly associated with self-medication practices. Intervention measures are necessary to improve health literacy and monitor antibiotic sales in retail pharmacies.

Carriage of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in a high-density informal settlement in Kenya is associated with environmental risk-factors

Sylvia Omulo et al.

Summary: A study conducted in Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya found that the impact of antibiotic use on antimicrobial resistance prevalence is minimal, as transmission of resistant bacteria through unsanitary living conditions likely overwhelms incremental changes in antibiotic use. Under such circumstances, sanitation, hygiene, and disease transmission are the key factors influencing the prevalence of resistant bacteria.

Summary: The study compared antibiotic access and use practices in six LMICs, revealing significant differences between countries. Self-medication with antibiotics was found to be common in some countries due to its time and cost-saving benefits; factors influencing treatment-seeking included policies, trust in suppliers and drugs, disease severity, and whether antibiotics were intended for children.
