POF Smart Pants: a fully portable optical fiber-integrated smart textile for remote monitoring of lower limb biomechanics

Leticia Avellar et al.

Summary: This paper presents the development of an optical fiber-integrated smart textile used as an instrumented pants for biomechanical and activity recognition. The optical fiber sensor based on the multiplexed intensity variation technique shows high sensitivities and is used for normalization. Tests indicate the suitability of the proposed device for assessing human movement biomechanics and gait parameters in different activities and velocity conditions, with high accuracy in activity recognition. The optimization of sensor numbers through principal components analysis reduces the number of sensors while maintaining high accuracy levels.

Fatigue Life Measuring System Using Fiber Optic Sensors for CFRP Pantograph Upper Arm

Xiao-Yu Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigates a life assessment method for carbon fiber-reinforced plastic upper frames using fiber Bragg grating sensors. A measuring system based on optical fiber sensing technology is developed for fatigue life monitoring, and the effectiveness of the system is verified through analysis of fatigue simulation results and measured data. Experimental results show that the system designed by optical fiber sensing technology accurately detects the fatigue life of the carbon fiber composite upper arm.

An experimental investigation on reliability of FBG sensors packaged with CFRP

Yongjie Li et al.

Summary: This paper experimentally investigated the reliability of FBG sensors packaged with CFRP and found that packaging layers and sizes have significant influences on the reliability of CFRP packaged FBG sensors. Considering the full-scale fatigue test of wind turbine blades, the layers and sizes of CFRP must be taken into account when packaging FBG sensors.
