An antibacterial porous calcium phosphate bilayer functional coatings on titanium dental implants

Christie Ying Kei Lung et al.

Summary: A newly designed antibacterial porous calcium phosphate bilayer coating incorporated with molybdenum trioxide was successfully applied to titanium implants. The coating enhanced mineral calcium phosphate formation, promoted cell growth and exhibited better antibacterial activity compared to the calcium phosphate coating. The combination of a porous structure, bilayer coating, and doped molybdenum oxide is crucial for improving the performance of calcium phosphate coating.

Zn-doped Mono- and Biphasic Calcium Phosphate Materials Derived from Agriculture Waste and Their Potential Biomedical Applications: Part I

Marta Kalbarczyk et al.

Summary: Using hen eggshells as a calcium source, calcium phosphate materials were synthesized through a simple and environmentally friendly wet synthesis method. The incorporation of Zn ions into hydroxyapatite (HA) was successfully demonstrated. The composition of the obtained ceramics depended on the zinc content, with the presence of dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) increasing as the concentration of Zn increased. All doped HA materials exhibited antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. However, these materials showed cytotoxic effects on preosteoblasts (MC3T3-E1 Subclone 4) in vitro, most likely due to their high ionic reactivity.

Summary: The influence of ionic substitution in the Ca1-xCoxHPO4 & BULL;nH(2)O compound was systematically studied for the first time. The experimental findings revealed that the Co/Ca molar ratio had a significant impact on the material's microstructure, and tuning this ratio ultimately tailored the desired properties of the material for specific applications.

The study of hydroxyapatite growth kinetics on CP-Ti and Ti65Zr treated by Plasma electrolytic oxidation process

Elinor Zadkani Nahum et al.

Summary: The kinetics of hydroxyapatite growth on titanium alloys (CP-Ti and Ti65Zr) treated by Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) were studied. The surface morphology, chemical and phase composition changes were observed after immersion in Hanks' solution and different exposure times. Tiny HA crystals were observed on the CP-Ti samples after 5 and 30 min of PEO treatment, while a distinct layer of HA was obtained on the Ti65Zr samples after 5 min of PEO treatment. The highest crystal growth velocity was observed for the Ti65Zr samples treated for 5 min of PEO and immersed for 14 days.

Nucleation and growth of brushite crystals on the graphene sheets applicable in bone cement

Hassan Nosrati et al.

Summary: The addition of graphene enhances the mechanical and biological properties of calcium phosphates. This study investigates the nucleation and growth mechanism of brushite crystals on graphene sheets. The results show that brushite crystals can grow on specific crystal planes with the presence of graphene, forming plate-shaped particles. Moreover, increasing the graphene content can shorten the setting time and improve the mechanical properties of the material.

Effects of magnetite incorporation in a chemically bonded phosphate ceramic

Mazen Alshaaer et al.

Summary: In this study, coarse magnetite was introduced as a reactive component in wollastonite-based chemically bonded phosphate ceramics (WPC), resulting in the formation of new stable microstructural phases with iron phosphate cementitious matrix. The new ceramics (M-WCP) exhibited much lower shrinkage and higher stiffness than WPC, even at elevated temperatures. Moreover, the compressive strength of M-WPC was significantly increased by introducing coarse magnetite, making it suitable for various applications in construction, waste stabilization, and storage systems for radioactive materials.

Ion-doped Brushite Cements for Bone Regeneration

K. Hurle et al.

Summary: Decades of research in orthopedics have led to the development of formidable yet resorbable biomaterials using bioactive materials. Brushite cements have high biocompatibility, bioresorbability, osteoconductivity, self-setting characteristics, handling, and injectability properties. Incorporating bioactive ions can improve the mechanical properties of such biomaterials. Ion-doped brushite cements have opened a new era in orthopedics, with applications in bone tissue repair and regeneration, enhanced by their bioresorbability and osteoconductive features. The role of ions in physicochemical and biological properties, as well as the potential use of ion-doped cements for drug delivery, are highlighted.

Microstructural characteristics and long-term stability of wollastonite-based chemically bonded phosphate ceramics

Mazen Alshaaer

Summary: The microstructure of a wollastonite chemically bonded phosphate ceramic (WCPC) includes brushite, wollastonite, and an amorphous phase, with the transformation of brushite and amorphous matrix to a more stable CaP phase taking place over time. The mechanical performance of the ceramic improves with thermal aging, leading to denser, more stable phases and increased stiffness. However, the primary disadvantage of using this material in construction is its relatively high shrinkage due to chemical and physical factors.

Gradual Replacement of Ca2+ with Mg2+ Ions in Brushite for the Production of Ca1-xMgxHPO4•nH2O Materials

Mazen Alshaaer et al.

Summary: The study investigates the gradual replacement of Ca2+ with Mg2+ ions in brushite to produce Ca1-xMgxHPO4 center dot nH(2)O materials suitable for environmental and medical applications. Analysis using XRD, XPS, TG, and SEM shows that the microstructure of the materials varies with the degree of Ca replacement through Mg doping. Monitoring the Mg/Ca ratio in the starting solution allows for the obtainment of materials with tailored composition.

Effect of Ca2+ Replacement with Cu2+ Ions in Brushite on the Phase Composition and Crystal Structure

Mazen Alshaaer et al.

Summary: The study explores the gradual replacement of Ca2+ with Cu2+ ions in brushite, introducing a novel approach for the production of materials suitable for medical applications. By adjusting the Cu/Ca ratio in the starting solution, materials with tailored composition can be obtained, and a new method of sampleite-like synthesis is introduced. Phosphate minerals brushite and sampleite-like minerals are attractive for bioceramics and biocements, potentially reducing the risk of post-surgical complications.
