Design of Spherical Gel-Based Magnetic Composites: Synthesis and Characterization

Pavel A. Shabadrov et al.

Summary: The study aimed to synthesize and characterize spherical beads of magnetically active composite ferrogels (FGs) for drug delivery and/or replacement therapy. The FGs were composed of calcium alginate (CaAlg), polyacrylamide (PAAm), and a combination of CaAlg and PAAm. The presence of chemical and physical networking in PAAm/CaAlg FGs provided the densest network. Embedding maghemite nanoparticles increased the swelling ratio of the polymeric network, indicating weak intermolecular interactions between the polymer and the filler. These findings are important for designing spherical FG beads with desired size and physicochemical properties.

Thermodynamic Compatibility of Polyacrylamide with Agarose: The Effect of Polysaccharide Chain Stiffness

A. P. Safronov et al.

Summary: The enthalpy, Gibbs free energy, and entropy of mixing for polyacrylamide and agarose were determined, showing negative mixing enthalpy and negative entropy across all composition ranges, indicating ordering in the polymer mixture. Mixtures with more than 50% agarose were thermodynamically compatible with negative Gibbs energies, while mixtures with less than 50% agarose were thermodynamically incompatible with positive Gibbs energies. Sorption data was processed using a model that took into account the effect of polysaccharide chain stiffness on water chemical potential changes during sorption, showing good agreement with experimental isotherms.

Highly Elastic, Sensitive, Stretchable, and Skin-Inspired Conductive Sodium Alginate/Polyacrylamide/Gallium Composite Hydrogel with Toughness as a Flexible Strain Sensor

Qinglong Cao et al.

Summary: A highly strain-sensitive skin-like hydrogel sensor was designed using acrylamide and sodium alginate, with liquid metallic gallium as a conductive filler. The sensor had similar properties to human skin, such as low elastic modulus, high toughness, and large tensile deformation, while also possessing excellent electrical conductivity and transparency. It exhibited high sensitivity to strain and pressure, enabling the monitoring of various human motions and even human-computer communication.

Hydrogels: Properties and Applications in Biomedicine

Tzu-Chuan Ho et al.

Summary: Hydrogels are crosslinked polymer chains with 3D network structures and have high water content, soft structure, and porosity. Recent research has found that hydrogels have been widely applied in fields such as agriculture, biomaterials, the food industry, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. While not all hydrogels have good biodegradability and biocompatibility, their properties can be adjusted by modifying functional groups or incorporating natural polymers.

3D printed agar/ calcium alginate hydrogels with high shape fidelity and tailorable mechanical properties

Jilong Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, calcium alginate/agar 3D structures were printed with high resolution and tailorable mechanical properties by a thermal-assisted 3D printing method. The introduction of agar altered the rheological properties of the ink, increasing its viscosity for higher precision. The crosslinking of calcium alginate affected the swelling behavior and mechanical properties of printing gels after printing.
