Physical and Mechanical Characteristics of Variotropic Concrete during Cyclic and Continuous Sulfate Attack

Summary: The concrete of buildings and structures is increasingly at risk from aggressive pollutants. Technological methods for modifying concrete structure properties are promising as additional actions to counteract this risk. One effective solution is the use of centrifuged and vibrocentrifuged concrete with a variotropic structure. The aim of this study was to investigate the physical and mechanical properties of variotropic concretes when exposed to sulfate attack. The results showed that vibrocentrifuged concrete had the smallest mass loss, lowest strength reduction, and least sulfate attack compared to centrifuged and vibrated concrete.

Deterioration of Mechanical Properties of Axial Compression Concrete Columns with Corroded Stirrups Coupling on Load and Chloride

Summary: To study the deterioration of stirrup-corroded concrete columns under load and chloride, accelerated corrosion and load carrying capacity tests were conducted. The results showed that corrosion-induced cracks mainly developed along the longitudinal reinforcing steel bars and had little effect on the corroded stirrups. The stiffness and ultimate bearing capacity of the column decreased with the increase in stirrup corrosion rate.

Chloride corrosion resistance of cement mortar with recycled concrete powder modified by nano-silica

Summary: The objective of this paper is to propose tools for infrastructure lifecycle management by showing the degradation processes and utilizing inspection data, specifically non-destructive testing (NDT) and structural health monitoring (SHM). These processes are multiphasic and can be divided into different phases with specific maintenance actions and measurement techniques. The proposed degradation meta-modelling approach, based on state-dependent stochastic processes, is used to model the degradation and maintenance of reinforced concrete structures affected by chloride-induced deterioration. The benefits of using multiphasic degradation meta-models in infrastructure lifecycle management are demonstrated through numerical examples with different management policies.

A cyclic drying-wetting test using saltwater was conducted to accelerate steel corrosion in reinforced concrete (RC) members. Results showed a linear relationship between OCP and cover depth, which was more prominent with higher chloride concentration and longer exposure time.

Nano-Modified Vibrocentrifuged Concrete with Granulated Blast Slag: The Relationship between Mechanical Properties and Micro-Structural Analysis

Summary: Currently, in civil engineering, the focus is on minimizing the cost and improving the efficiency of manufacturing and construction of hollow structures. This study aims to theoretically and experimentally explore the potential of using vibrocentrifugation technology and ground granulated blast-furnace slag to create improved variotropic structures of concrete. Various methods were used, including electron microscopy, laser granulometry, and X-ray diffraction, to analyze the composition, macrostructure, microstructure, and final properties of the modified concrete. The optimal dosage of slag was determined to be 40%, resulting in an increase in strength indicators by 16% to 27% and density by 3%.

Numerical Simulation of the Bearing Capacity of Variotropic Short Concrete Beams Reinforced with Polymer Composite Reinforcing Bars

Summary: One disadvantage of reinforced concrete is its heavy weight. This study investigates the use of polymer composite reinforcement and variotropic building elements as alternatives. Numerical models were developed to analyze short bending concrete elements with polymer composite rods. It was found that carbon composite reinforcement has advantages over glass or basalt composite, providing greater bearing capacity. The study also observed a clear redistribution of stresses in favor of variotropic cross sections.

Nano modifying additive micro silica influence on integral and differential characteristics of vibrocentrifuged concrete

Summary: The usage of nano modifying additives for developing new building materials is an important scientific problem. This study investigates the effect of a nano modifying additive on the structure of heavy concrete during vibrocentrifugation. It was found that adding 10% micro-silica to concrete resulted in the highest compressive and tensile strengths, as well as the smallest strains. Graphical dependencies of concrete properties on its composition were obtained.

Assessment of the Corrosion of Steel Embedded in an Alkali-Activated Hybrid Concrete Exposed to Chlorides
