Evaluation of millets for physio-chemical and root morphological traits suitable for resilient farming and nutritional security in Eastern Himalayas

Jayanta Layek et al.

Summary: This study conducted a three-year experiment in an organic production system in the North Eastern Himalayan foothills of India to evaluate different high-yielding varieties of millets and to identify genotypes suitable for the region. The results showed that finger millet, followed by little millet and foxtail millet, demonstrated superior productivity compared to other millets. The local landraces Nagaland-2 and Sikkim-1, along with the variety VL Mandua 352, showed promising characteristics in terms of yield and root traits. Therefore, promoting these genotypes can contribute to food and nutritional security in this region.

Genotypic variability and physio-morphological efficiency of buckwheat (Fagopyrum spp.) under moisture stress at mid-altitudes of Meghalaya (India)

Subarna Hajong et al.

Summary: This study identified potential buckwheat genotypes and stress mechanisms in the hill environments of Meghalaya, India. It found substantial genetic variability in various traits related to shoot length, crop canopy distribution, leaf area retention, seed weight, and seed yield. High-yielding genotypes exhibited higher photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and chlorophyll content, indicating their better water use efficiency and drought tolerance. The promising genotypes for enhanced productivity in this mountainous ecosystem were IC13411 and IC24298.

Double no-till and rice straw retention in terraced sloping lands improves water content, soil health and productivity of lentil in Himalayan foothills

Jayanta Layek et al.

Summary: Designing suitable conservation tillage and rice straw management practices are vital for growing a second crop like lentil after rice, as it can improve soil water retention, enhance soil physico-chemical properties, and increase crop productivity.

Lime equivalence of organic manures and scope of their utilization as acid soil amendments

Samarendra Hazarika et al.

Summary: The study found that the application of organic manures, such as poultry and pig manure, significantly reduced the exchangeable acidity and readily soluble aluminum content in the soil, while increasing soil pH, organic carbon content, and microbial biomass carbon. The use of poultry and pig manure also promoted the improvement of soil fertility, enhancing plant chlorophyll content, root growth, fruit yield, and harvest index.

Managing rice fallow lands of the Eastern Indian Himalayas: Impacts of residue management and varietal interventions on soil properties, carbon stocks, and productivity

Jayanta Layek et al.

Summary: The study showed that retaining crop residues or mulching in the rice-lentil system can increase soil moisture retention, reduce bulk density, increase water-holding capacity, improve water infiltration rate, increase organic carbon content and microbial activity, thus improving soil properties and increasing lentil productivity.

Conservation tillage and nutrient management practices in summer rice (Oryza sativa L.) favoured root growth and phenotypic plasticity of succeeding winter pea (Pisum sativumL.) under eastern Himalayas, India

Anup Das et al.

Summary: In the Himalayan ecosystems, the selection of suitable crop varieties, tillage practices, and nutrient management are crucial for enhancing crop productivity. Research findings indicate that under continuous summer rice cultivation with conventional tillage and NPK application, pea plants show significant improvements in root growth attributes and morpho-physiology.
