Material Flow Analysis of Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling in Europe: Environmental and Economic Implications

Martina Bruno et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively analyzed the material flows associated with End of Life (EoL) lithium-ion batteries' (LIBs) materials in Europe. The findings show that the existing European recycling capacity will overlook over 78% of the forecasted EoL LIBs. The study also suggests that hydrometallurgy presents the best economic and environmental trade-off compared to other recycling strategies.

Detailed Microparticle Analyses Providing Process Relevant Chemical and Microtextural Insights into the Black Mass

Mickael Dade et al.

Summary: Eramet uses a combination of physical and hydrometallurgical treatment to recycle lithium-ion batteries. The black mass containing valuable elements along with other components is recovered through mechanical treatment. Chemical analysis and characterization of particles are conducted to evaluate the suitability and quality of the black mass. Further physical mineral processing simulation is used to optimize the purity of valuable elements.
