Evaluation of hydrothermal sugarcane bagasse treatment for the production of xylooligosaccharides in different pressures

Carla Roana M. Monteiro et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the release of main components of sugarcane bagasse during hydrothermal treatment and found that 85% of sugar extraction capacity was reached after 15 minutes at both 2.5 and 10 MPa pressures. The xylose content was similar at both pressures, while the XOS yield was higher at 10 MPa. Hydrothermal processing is a solvent-free technology that can be used for the extraction of xylooligosaccharides from sugarcane bagasse, offering a sustainable strategy for the utilization of this material.

Coproduction xylo-oligosaccharides with low degree of polymerization and glucose from sugarcane bagasse by non-isothermal subcritical carbon dioxide assisted seawater autohydrolysis

Weiwei Zhang et al.

Summary: High pretreatment temperature is necessary to obtain xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS) with low degree of polymerization (DP). However, traditional isothermal pretreatment for XOS production may increase the generation of xylose and furfural with the reaction time extending (10-100 min). In this study, non-isothermal subcritical CO2-assisted seawater autohydrolysis (NSCSA) was used for the coproduction of XOS with low DP and glucose, resulting in a significantly higher XOS yield and specific surface area compared to traditional methods.

Efficient secretion of xylanase in Escherichia coli for production of prebiotic xylooligosaccharides

Jiapen Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the N-terminal 20 amino acid of Lactobacillus amylovorus feruloyl esterase (N20) was used as a signal peptide to fuse with a xylanase Xyl derived from Bacillus paralicheniformis. The fused protein N20-Xyl could be effectively secreted from E. coli BL21(DE3) cells. Enzymatic characterization showed that Xyl and N20-Xyl had similar properties with optimal pH of 8.0 and temperature of 50°C. Xylooligosaccharides were prepared through simultaneous xylanase secretion and xylan degradation by using E. coli, with the main products being xylobiose, xylotriose, and xylotetraose. Moreover, several Lactobacillus strains were found to efficiently utilize these xylooligosaccharides for growth.
