Regional height growth models for Scots pine in Poland

Jaroslaw Socha et al.

Summary: Site productivity is crucial for tree growth resource availability, with site index commonly used as an indirect proxy. Developing regional models helps determine forest growth and site index accurately, highlighting the importance of considering the natural forest region effect in height growth modeling for Scots pine in Poland. The study found differences in height growth patterns among different natural forest regions and showed that acknowledging region as an independent variable can improve growth prediction and site index estimation quality.

Survey of macrofungal diversity and analysis of edaphic factors influencing the fungal community of church forests in Dry Afromontane areas of Northern Ethiopia

Demelash Alem et al.

Summary: The study investigated the fungal diversity of three Dry Afromontane church forests, identifying potentially novel fungal species and highlighting the value of these forests in providing valuable non-timber forest products like mushrooms for local communities. The importance of conserving individual forests is emphasized, and the fungal communities are influenced by edaphic, spatial, and climate variables.

Retention of Matured Trees to Conserve Fungal Diversity and Edible Sporocarps from Short-Rotation Pinus radiata Plantations in Ethiopia

Tatek Dejene et al.

Summary: This study conducted in short-rotation plantations in the Afromontane Region of Ethiopia found that fungal richness, diversity, and ectomycorrhizal species richness were higher in mature stands, with sporocarp yield showing increasing trends towards maturity. Organic matter and C/N ratio significantly affected fungal composition and sporocarp production. Retaining mature trees in a patch form rather than clear felling can help conserve and promote fungal diversity and production while serving as a bridge for providing fungal inocula to new plantations.

FungalTraits: a user-friendly traits database of fungi and fungus-like stramenopiles

Sergei Polme et al.

Summary: The article introduces a database FungalTraits to facilitate functional assignments and ecological interpretation of fungi, discussing the challenges between molecular identification of fungal diversity and knowledge of functional traits. Through the involvement of expert knowledge and tools, researchers reannotated a large number of fungal and Stramenopila genera, summarizing them into 17 lifestyle-related traits suitable for environmental studies.
