Expression of immune checkpoint molecules on adult and neonatal T-cells

Stefanie Dietz et al.

Summary: Term and preterm neonates are more susceptible to severe bacterial infections and post-inflammatory diseases than adults. The increased activation of neonatal T-cells may contribute to the failure of inflammation resolution and the increased risk of developing post-inflammatory diseases in neonates.

Preterm birth and asthma and COPD in adulthood: a nationwide register study from two Nordic countries

Anna Pulakka et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between gestational age and obstructive airway disease in adulthood. The results showed that the odds of developing obstructive airway disease were higher for individuals born preterm compared to those born full term. The association was consistent across different gestational age groups and in both Finnish and Norwegian data.

Understanding the increased susceptibility to asthma development in preterm infants

Jeremy Anderson et al.

Summary: Preterm birth is linked to abnormal lung development and higher risk of chronic lung diseases, including asthma. The higher rate of viral infections and altered microbiomes in preterm infants compared to term infants may contribute to the development of asthma. Therefore, investigating the immunological differences between preterm and term infants will provide valuable insights into the immunological basis of asthma susceptibility and inform interventions to reduce the burden of asthma in this population.

Development of lung diffusion to adulthood following extremely preterm birth

Emma Satrell et al.

Summary: Pulmonary diffusing capacity in extremely preterm (EP) infants compared to term-born subjects remains reduced during adulthood, with development tracking in parallel to controls, showing no signs of catch-up growth or decline at age 25 years.

Tracking of lung function from 10 to 35 years after being born extremely preterm or with extremely low birth weight

Tonje Bardsen et al.

Summary: The study found that individuals born extremely preterm had significantly lower lung function trajectories from 10 to 35 years compared to those born at term, especially during the period of decline from 25 to 35 years. However, the deficits between extremely preterm-born and term-born individuals decreased with each decade of birth from 1980 to 2000.

Perinatal development of innate immune topology

Philipp Henneke et al.

Summary: This article discusses the changes in the immune system from intrauterine to postnatal life, including intrinsic changes in immune cells, replacement of fetal cells, and global regulatory mechanisms impacting the microenvironment. Perinatal alterations particularly affect immune niches with discrete functions. The article poses three questions for further exploration in regards to immune cell differentiation and adaptation during development and the impact of birth on tissue immune composition.
