Chromosomally normal miscarriage is associated with vaginal dysbiosis and local inflammation

Summary: This study investigated the vaginal microbiota composition and local immune response in chromosomally normal and abnormal miscarriages, compared to uncomplicated pregnancies delivering at term. The results showed that euploid miscarriage was associated with a higher prevalence of Lactobacillus spp. depleted vaginal microbiota, which was also correlated with elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of proprietary lactobacilli-loaded vaginal capsules in improving an unfavorable vaginal microbiome. The results suggest that administering vaginal probiotics may not be an effective means of modulating the vaginal microbiome for clinical purposes in an infertile population. However, the study also found a spontaneous improvement rate of 34.2% over a period of one to three months, indicating the dynamic nature of the vaginal microbiota and suggesting that postponing further IVF treatment to await microbiota improvement may be relevant in some patients.

Vaginal microbiota in women with spontaneous preterm labor versus those with term labor in Kenya: a case control study

Summary: This study aimed to explore the association between vaginal microbiota and/or placental microbiota and preterm birth in an African setting. The results showed no significant association between the composition of vaginal microbiota and preterm birth. However, the study provided important information on the diversity of sequence types in African women and supported the notion that women of African ancestry have an increased frequency of non-Lactobacillus types, without evidence of associated adverse outcomes.
