Cognitive reserve as a moderating factor between EDSS and cognition in multiple sclerosis

Tremblay Alexandra et al.

Summary: It is recognized that brain damage and atrophy on MRI are only moderately linked to cognitive functioning. The cognitive reserve (CR) hypothesis has been proposed to explain this, but has only been recently addressed in the MS literature and not thoroughly investigated. This study aims to examine the protective role of CR in cognition using a standardized CR tool in a population with a wide age range.

Tele-Global Examination of Mental State (Tele-GEMS): an open tool for the remote neuropsychological screening

Sonia Montemurro et al.

Summary: Tele-neuropsychology, the use of remote audio-visual technologies in neuropsychological assessment or rehabilitation, has gained popularity during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. This study presents Tele-GEMS, a telephone-based cognitive screening test developed on a sample of 601 Italian participants. It shows good reliability and validity, and includes demographic adjustments and threshold values for significant change. Protective factors for subjective cognitive decline individuals: trajectories and changes in a longitudinal study with Italian elderly

Sara Mondini et al.

Summary: This study highlights the importance of education and occupation in predicting cognitive performance in older adults, with higher levels of education and occupation associated with better resistance to cognitive decline. Cognitive reserve plays a crucial role in predicting performance across different levels of cognitive ability.

Cognitive functions and disability progression in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis: A longitudinal study

Eyal Heled et al.

Summary: Longitudinal studies have shown that the relationship between cognition and clinical status in RRMS patients varies across different age and sex groups. Cognitive function is negatively correlated with clinical impairment, with executive functions, attention, and information processing speed showing decline between assessments. In this study, IPS was found to be the most sensitive in predicting future clinical condition.

The relationship between cognition, depression, fatigue, and disability in patients with multiple sclerosis

Pinar Yigit et al.

Summary: The study found that disability and fatigue adversely affect the cognitive functions of pwMS, while depression has no significant impact. The MS-specific BICAMS test can be beneficial in assessing the cognitive state of pwMS.

Cognitive Reserve, Alzheimer's Neuropathology, and Risk of Dementia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Monica E. Nelson et al.

Summary: Research indicates that high cognitive reserve is associated with a reduced risk of mild cognitive impairment and dementia, with residual-based cognitive reserve able to reduce risk by 62%. Additionally, proxy-based measures of cognitive reserve are as important as residual-based measures in affecting dementia incidence.
