Impact of 18F-Labeled Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography Versus Conventional Staging in Patients With Locally Advanced Breast Cancer

Ian S. Dayes et al.

Summary: The study found that PET-CT staging detected more distant metastases and resulted in fewer patients receiving combined modality therapy. By comparing the results between the conventional staging group and the PET-CT group, the utility of PET-CT staging strategy has been demonstrated.

2-[18F]FDG-PET/CT is a better predictor of survival than conventional CT: a prospective study of response monitoring in metastatic breast cancer

Marianne Vogsen et al.

Summary: This study compares CE-CT and 2-[F-18]FDG-PET/CT for monitoring treatment response in metastatic breast cancer patients. The results show that 2-[F-18]FDG-PET/CT is a better predictor of progression-free and disease-specific survival compared to CE-CT, and there is low concordance between the two modalities in response categorization.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the feasibility of using Ga-68-fibroblast activation protein inhibitor (FAPI) PET/CT for detecting metastatic disease in patients with non-F-18-FDG-avid invasive lobular breast cancer (ILC). The results showed that FAPI PET/CT was more accurate than CT in detecting metastatic lesions in ILC.

Summary: In this study, we compared the impact of two reconstruction algorithms (Q.Clear and OSEM) on the image quality and quantification parameters of 2-[F-18]FDG-PET/CT scans in metastatic breast cancer patients. The results showed that Q.Clear reconstruction exhibited better sharpness, contrast, and higher values for SULpeak and SUVmax compared to OSEM reconstruction.

Summary: The study developed a model using Non-Local Means (NLM) and morphological operations to accurately segment head and neck cancer tumors in three-dimensional (3D) positron emission tomography (PET) images. The model achieved high accuracy in segmenting HNC tumors in PET images, demonstrating its effectiveness in treatment planning and personalized medicine development.

Summary: This study developed two deep learning models for automatic segmentation of metastatic breast cancer lesions and evaluated their potential to determine treatment response through the computation of four imaging biomarkers. The results demonstrated that automatic segmentation can successfully compute these biomarkers, which can be used to determine patients' treatment response.

16a-18F-fluoro-17b-Fluoroestradiol (FES): Clinical Applications for Patients With Breast Cancer

Gary A. Ulaner

Summary: Estrogen receptor (ER) is highly expressed in 70%-80% of breast cancers and plays a central role in prognosis and treatment selection. The gold standard for determining ER status has been pathology, but it has limitations in providing spatial and temporal information and determining ER functionality. 16a-18F-fluoro-17b-Fluoroestradiol (FES) is a radiolabeled form of estrogen that allows non-invasive evaluation of functional ER. FES has shown correlation with ER immunohistochemistry, detection of ER heterogeneity, and high diagnostic accuracy for ER-positive tumors.

Head-to-Head Comparison of Fibroblast Activation Protein Inhibitors (FAPI) Radiotracers versus [18F]F-FDG in Oncology: A Systematic Review

Giorgio Treglia et al.

Summary: Recent studies have compared radiolabeled fibroblast activation protein inhibitors (FAPI) and fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose ([F-18]F-FDG) as PET radiotracers in oncology. The evidence suggests that radiolabeled FAPI PET generally shows equal or higher detection rates for primary tumors and metastatic lesions compared to [F-18]F-FDG PET, particularly in gastrointestinal tumors, liver tumors, breast cancer, and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Further comparison studies are needed to determine the optimal application of radiolabeled FAPI PET.

Summary: Comparing lesion-based sensitivity of dual-time-point FDG-PET/CT, bone scintigraphy (BS), and low-dose CT (LDCT) for detection of bone metastases in metastatic breast cancer patients, FDG-PET/CT demonstrated significantly higher sensitivity than LDCT and BS, while combining BS and LDCT provided sensitivity comparable to FDG-PET/CT.

Benefits and harms of implementing [18F]FDG-PET/CT for diagnosing recurrent breast cancer: a prospective clinical study

Marianne Vogsen et al.

Summary: Implementing [F-18]-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography ([F-18]FDG-PET/CT) for clinically suspected recurrent breast cancer patients can detect metastases and incidental malignant or benign findings, with some clinically relevant conditions being identified from incidental findings. Sensitivity, specificity, and AUC-ROC for diagnosing distant metastases were high, indicating the effectiveness of [F-18]FDG-PET/CT in clinical practice.
