Preparing UK PhD students towards employability: a social science internship programme to enhance workplace skills

What really contributes to employability of PhD graduates in uncertain labour markets?

Summary: This study fills the knowledge gap regarding the employability outcomes of PhD holders by conducting in-depth interviews with 23 PhD graduates in Australia. The findings suggest that the graduates' ability to use human capital for their careers depends on their expertise acquired from previous degrees, time since graduation, and workplace positions. Social capital and employability agency were also identified as significant factors contributing to graduates' career success. The findings provide support for understanding how agency is facilitated and constrained by structural and personal resources, and the implications of these findings are discussed.

Doctoral researchers' mental health and PhD training satisfaction during the German COVID-19 lockdown: results from an international research sample

Summary: Academia, especially early career researchers, is facing a mental health crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated the burden on the mental health of individuals. A study was conducted to assess the mental health status and satisfaction with PhD training of doctoral researchers before and during the pandemic. The findings showed decreased satisfaction with PhD training and overall well-being, high levels of burnout, significant depressive symptoms, and severe loneliness. Low satisfaction with PhD training was identified as the most prominent predictor for poor mental health. Females and those in individual doctorate programs reported higher levels of burnout. The study highlights the need for systematic adjustments in academia to improve the mental health of early career researchers.

Study Engagement and Burnout of the PhD Candidates in Medicine: A Person-Centered Approach

Summary: This study found that a significant number of PhD candidates in medicine had an increased risk for developing burnout, but for most of the PhD candidates, research education is an engaging experience. Working in a clinical unit or hospital and working in a research group seemed to be related to increased engagement and reduced risk for suffering burnout. However, intentions to quit one's doctoral studies were more frequently reported in profiles with moderate levels of engagement.
