Corneal Strain Induced by Intracorneal Ring Segment Implantation Visualized With Optical Coherence Elastography

Emilio A. Torres-Netto et al.

Summary: This study directly records the strain field in the cornea after stromal tunnel creation and implantation of an intracorneal ring segment. The results show that implantation of the ring segment induces localized strains in the regions subjected to refractive changes, which suggests a direct relationship between corneal strain and curvature. Understanding corneal strain in response to surgical intervention may provide new insights on underlying working principles.

Clinical Outcomes of Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Implantation of Asymmetric ICRS in Keratoconus With No Coincidence of Topographic and Comatic Axes

Haikel Kammoun et al.

Summary: The study showed that implantation of asymmetric intracorneal corneal ring segments in patients with keratoconus can significantly improve visual acuity, normalize corneal shape, and reduce levels of higher order aberrations. Most patients experienced stable or improved CDVA after 3 months post-surgery, with significant effects on corneal keratometry, aberrations, and prolateness.

Refractive changes of a new asymmetric intracorneal ring segment with variable thickness and base width: A 2D finite-element model

Gonzalo Garcia de Oteyza et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the local geometric effects of a unilateral intrastromal ring segment with combined variation of ring thickness and base width in a finite element simulation. Results showed that increasing ring thickness and base width along the arc of the asymmetric ring segment produced a more pronounced flattening, suggesting that intracorneal asymmetric ring segments with varying thickness and base width can be a good alternative for corneas with asymmetric keratoconus phenotypes.
