Versatile clinical movement analysis using statistical parametric mapping in MovementRx

Amr Alhossary et al.

Summary: Clinical gait analysis is prone to subjectivity errors, but Statistical Parametric Mapping can overcome these errors by analyzing all time-varying joint dynamics simultaneously. MovementRx is a versatile and user-friendly application that accurately models joint deviations in 3 and 1 degrees of freedom, providing color maps for easy interpretation by clinicians. It offers a holistic view of lower limb joints and allows for specific analysis of individual movement components.

Speed Rope Skipping-Performance and Coordination in a Four-Limb Task

Nicolai Lorke et al.

Summary: This study investigated the biomechanical characteristics of Speed Rope Skipping and found that the lower limbs of all participants showed similar movement patterns, while the trajectories of the handle differed according to performance. The study also revealed that turning performance was more similar to skipping performance and had a significant correlation with it. It suggests that lower extremity movement may be adapted to the limiting capacity of the upper extremity to maintain movement stability.

Effects of Shoe-Stiffening Inserts on Lower Extremity Kinematics in Individuals With First Metatarsophalangeal Joint Osteoarthritis

Jodie A. McClelland et al.

Summary: Carbon fiber shoe-stiffening inserts significantly alter lower extremity joint kinematics during walking, especially the maximum dorsiflexion of the first metatarsophalangeal joint. These findings provide insights into the mechanisms underlying the clinical effectiveness of carbon fiber shoe-stiffening inserts in the treatment of first metatarsophalangeal joint osteoarthritis and potentially explain changes in symptoms in other lower extremity joints.

Influence of Shod and Barefoot Running on the In Vivo Kinematics of the First Metatarsophalangeal Joint

Faning Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the differences in the six-degree-of-freedom (6DOF) kinematics of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) between shod and barefoot running. The results showed that wearing shoes limited the flexion and extension movement of the first MTPJ and increased the adduction angle, potentially increasing the risk of hallux valgus.

Running Footwear and Impact Peak Differences in Recreational Runners

Federico Roggio et al.

Summary: This study investigates the different running patterns of recreational runners by analyzing characteristics of the footwear impact peak, spatiotemporal, and kinematic parameters among those that present with a peak impact and those that do not, with a 3D markerless system. The results highlight kinematic and spatiotemporal differences between the runners presenting a higher impact peak and those without it. Furthermore, it is observed that runners without an impact peak prefer shoes with a lower heel-to-toe drop, while the other group prefers shoes with a higher heel-to-toe drop.

The Influence of Different Rope Jumping Methods on Adolescents' Lower Limb Biomechanics during the Ground-Contact Phase

Yi Lin et al.

Summary: Rope skipping is a simple and beneficial exercise favored by teenagers. This study found that compared to alternating jump rope skipping, bounced jump skipping reduces the ground reaction force and has a better landing buffer strategy for teenagers, resulting in lower injury risk. Bounced jump skipping primarily activates the calf muscles, while alternating jump rope skipping primarily activates the thigh muscles. Additionally, excessive back extension of the metatarsophalangeal joint during rope skipping may pose a potential risk of injury.

The mechanical role of the metatarsophalangeal joint in human jumping

Junichiro Yamauchi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanical role of the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints in human jumping. The results indicate that the motion of the MTP joints plays an important role in regulating the force-generating capacities of the toe flexor muscles in the take-off phase of human jumping, especially in the horizontal direction of horizontal jumping.

Energetics and Biomechanics of Running Footwear with Increased Longitudinal Bending Stiffness: A Narrative Review

Justin A. Ortega et al.

Summary: Studies on the effects of increased longitudinal bending stiffness on running economy report mixed results, ranging from 3% deterioration to 3% improvement. Carbon-fiber plates have the largest impact on metatarsal-phalangeal and ankle joint mechanics. Plate location and geometry affect joint moments and angular velocities differently, which partly explains the mixed running economy results.
