Silver Nanoparticles: Bactericidal and Mechanistic Approach against Drug Resistant Pathogens

Pragati Rajendra More et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and their mechanism of action against antibiotic-resistant and biofilm-forming bacteria. AgNPs exert their antibacterial effects through oxidative stress, protein dysfunction, membrane disruption, and DNA damage in bacteria. They also prevent biofilm formation by altering bacterial cell adhesion. However, the medical use of AgNPs is limited by their harmful effects on humans and the environment. The review compiles recent studies on the antibacterial activity of AgNPs and discusses their potential applications in medicine.

Medical gloves modified by a one-minute spraying process with blood-repellent, antibacterial and wound-healing abilities

Yi Zhuo et al.

Summary: Medical blood-repellent gloves (MBRG) have been developed by spraying a blood-repellent mist spray (MS) on the surface of ordinary medical gloves. MBRG show significantly higher blood repellent rate, effectively inhibit bacterial growth, and promote wound healing. MS is easy to prepare and can be applied to different types of medical gloves.

Antibacterial natural rubber latex films with surface-anchored quaternary poly(4-vinylpyridine) polyelectrolyte

Aswin Arakkal et al.

Summary: Chloroacetic acid is used to transform the surface of natural rubber film into antibacterial surfaces by conjugating it with quaternized Poly(4-vinylpyridine) (QP4-VP) through amide linkage. The antibacterial efficacy of the conjugated film is confirmed by inhibition zones against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

SiO2 and ZnO hybrid nanofillers modified natural rubber latex: Excellent mechanical and antibacterial properties

Wenjie Mou et al.

Summary: Modifying polymers with nanoparticles has been proven to be effective in improving polymer performance. In this study, silica and zinc oxide hybrid nanofillers were prepared using self-made dispersion equipment to modify natural rubber latex (NRL). The results show that uniformly dispersed nano-SiO2 fillers enhance the tensile properties of NRL, while uniformly dispersed nano-ZnO fillers exhibit excellent antibacterial properties.

Prevention of nosocomial transmission and biofilm formation on novel biocompatible antimicrobial gloves impregnated with biosynthesized silver nanoparticles synthesized using Eucalyptus citriodora leaf extract

Supakit Paosen et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the effectiveness of using silver nanoparticles-coated gloves in preventing the spread of healthcare-associated infections, with silver densely adhered to the surface and able to eradicate hospital-acquired pathogens while reducing bacterial adhesion. Experiments showed no transmission of viable organisms with the coated gloves in contamination and transmission assays, and biocompatibility analysis confirmed non-toxicity.

Poly(hexamethylene biguanide) (PHMB) as high-efficiency antibacterial coating for titanium substrates

Jiangmei Peng et al.

Summary: A new strategy was developed to combat bacterial associated infection on titanium alloy surfaces, resulting in a polymer coating that can kill 100% of both S. aureus and E. coli without compromising cytocompatibility. The coating could significantly inhibit bacterial colony growth and reduce inflammatory reactions, as verified in a rat infection model.

A critical review of the assessment of medical gloves

D. Preece et al.

Summary: Medical protective gloves need to be assessed to adequate standards before commercial use, with concerns raised over the standardisation of testing. Studies have shown that glove design can reduce tactile sensitivity in medical staff, impacting patient care, and the loss of grip control and dexterity through glove use can be detrimental to medical tasks. More research is needed to understand how wearing medical gloves affects users and patients.
