Hierarchical carbon nanofibers/carbon nanotubes/NiCo nanocomposites as novel highly effective counter electrode for dye-sensitized solar cells: A structure-electrocatalytic activity relationship study

Marcel Zambrzycki et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel Pt-free counter electrode (CE) material, based on hierarchical carbon nanofibers/carbon nanotubes/NiCo (eCNF/CNT/NiCoNP) ternary nanocomposites, was proposed for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). The nanocomposites were obtained through a combination of the electrospinning technique and CCVD synthesis. The morphology, surface chemistry, and structural ordering of the nanocomposites were found to have significant correlations with their electrocatalytic activity. The DSSC with eCNF/CNT/NiCoNP-electrodes exhibited higher efficiencies compared to Pt-based devices, demonstrating the excellent performance of the prepared CE.

Carbon nanofibers fabrication, surface modifications, and application as the innovative substrate for electrical stimulation of neural cell differentiation

Houra Nekounam et al.

Summary: The present study aimed to develop an innovative approach using electrical stimulation through a conductive scaffold to differentiate neural cells from human adipose mesenchymal stem cells without the use of a specific environment for neural differentiation. The treated electrospun carbon nanofibers (CNFs) showed low structural changes, good biocompatibility, and induced the expression of neural genes and proteins under electrical stimulation.

Structure and electrical transport properties of electrospun carbon nanofibers/carbon nanotubes 3D hierarchical nanocomposites: effect of the CCVD synthesis conditions

Marcel Zambrzycki et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the effects of synthesis conditions on the microstructure, structure, and electrical properties of electrospun carbon nanofibers/disordered carbon nanotubes (eCNF/dCNT) nanocomposites. The results showed that controlling the temperature and duration of carbon nanotube synthesis can tailor the microstructure, defect density, and electrical transport in the nanocomposites. Increasing the temperature and prolonging the growth time enhanced the conductivity of the nanocomposites. Additionally, a correlation between the half-width of the G-band and the electrical properties was found through Raman spectrum analysis.

Deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease

Marwan Hariz et al.

Summary: Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative illness with motor and nonmotor symptoms. Deep brain stimulation is an effective symptomatic treatment that can be tailored to individual patients. DBS has significant effects on tremors, rigidity, and dyskinesias, but less responsive for axial symptoms. Specialized multidisciplinary teams are required for DBS in PD.

The SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cell line, a relevant in vitro cell model for investigating neurotoxicology in human: Focus on organic pollutants

Lorena Lopez-Suarez et al.

Summary: Investigating the toxicity of chemicals on the human brain traditionally relies on animal and cell models, which have limitations due to species differences, ethical concerns, and time/cost constraints. Human cell models, such as the SH-SY5Y cell line, offer a relevant alternative for studying neurotoxicity and prioritizing in vivo testing. This review examines the characteristics and use of the SH-SY5Y cell line for studying the effects of organic environmental pollutants on neurotoxicity, highlighting the impacts on cellular processes and neurotransmitter homeostasis.

Structure and electrical transport properties of carbon nanofibres/carbon nanotubes 3D hierarchical nanocomposites: Impact of the concentration of acetylacetonate catalyst

Marcel Zambrzycki et al.

Summary: This study extensively analyzed the correlations between the structure and electrical properties of hierarchical nanocomposites, focusing on the impact of iron (III) acetylacetonate on core-eCNFs and the overall ordering and electrical properties of the nanocomposites. The investigation revealed that increasing Fe(Acac)(3) concentration resulted in higher CNT surface density, positively affecting electrical transport but causing amorphisation of core-eCNFs and increased activation energy. It was estimated that an Fe(Acac)(3) concentration of approximately 3.0% ensures the best electrical properties, and desorption of electrically active guest molecules leads to notable changes in electronic transport.
