Review of Antimicrobial Nanocoatings in Medicine and Dentistry: Mechanisms of Action, Biocompatibility Performance, Safety, and Benefits Compared to Antibiotics

James Butler et al.

Summary: This review discusses the development of antimicrobial nanocoatings for medical and dental applications. Nanomaterials can reduce bacterial growth and prevent biofilm formation through biochemical reactions, reactive oxygen species production, or physical damage. Nanocoatings can contain metal nanoparticles like silver, copper, and gold, or carbon-based materials like graphene and carbon nanotubes. Surface nanotopography can also be modified to create a hostile environment for bacteria. Combining different nanomaterials can create nanocomposites with unique properties. However, concerns remain about toxicity, legal regulations, and bacterial resistance. Safe development of antimicrobial nanocoatings requires careful consideration and risk assessment.

Secondary caries detection and treatment decision according to two criteria and the impact of three-dimensional intraoral scanner on gap evaluation

Bruna Lorena Pereira Moro et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of two visual criteria, FDI criteria and CARS system, in detecting caries around composite restorations in permanent posterior teeth. It also aimed to assess the correlation between secondary caries and the presence of gap measured with a 3D intraoral scanner. The results showed that both visual criteria had similar performance in detecting caries, and there was moderate correlation between treatment decisions based on FDI and CARS criteria. Visual examination outperformed the 3D intraoral scanner in assessing gap size.

A comparative life cycle assessment of dental restorative materials

Lucy Smith et al.

Summary: This research investigates the environmental impacts of three direct-placement dental restorative materials (DRMs) and their associated packaging through a comparative cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment. The results showed that dental amalgam had the highest impact across most categories, while resin-based composite (RBC) had the highest Global Warming Potential.

Novel dental composite resin derived from rice husk natural biowaste: A systematic review and recommendation for future advancement

Galvin Sim Siang Lin et al.

Summary: Rice husk dental composite resin shows comparable physical and mechanical properties, color stability to conventional composites, and an enhancement in compressive strength and hardness when zirconia nanopowder is incorporated. Due to its low cost, eco-friendly nature, and acceptable clinical performance, it can be considered as an alternative to traditional composites for root canal treated teeth.

Effect of Silica Nanoparticles Silanized by Functional/Functional or Functional/Non-Functional Silanes on the Physicochemical and Mechanical Properties of Dental Nanocomposite Resins

Stefanos Karkanis et al.

Summary: This study investigated the contribution of different silane blends to the performance of dental nanocomposite resins. The results showed that the use of different silane mixtures affected the polymerization properties, surface smoothness, and solubility of the resins. The experimental data provided important references for the design of dental nanocomposite resins.

Summary: This study investigated the static mechanical properties, spectral analysis, and SEM evaluation of seven new single-shade universal resin composites. The tested composites showed statistically significant effects on flexural strength, elastic modulus, Vickers micro-hardness, and degree of conversion. All seven composites met the ISO standards for dental resin composites.

Hao Niu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical behavior and reinforcement mechanism of dental resin composites with nanoparticle clusters (NCs) fillers using the discrete element method (DEM) simulations combined with experiments. The results show that using NCs and NPs as co-fillers can reduce the internal defects of DRCs and effectively improve their mechanical properties.

Accelerated Fatigue Model for Predicting Composite Restoration Failure

B. Yang et al.

Summary: An empirical method is proposed to predict the clinical performance of resin composite dental restorations using laboratory data. The method involves using simple specimens subjected to chemical degradation and accelerated cyclic fatigue to establish a relationship between laboratory time and clinical time to failure. The results show that the method can accurately predict the clinical failure rates of different materials.
