Collision cross-section as a universal molecular descriptor in the analysis of PFAS and use of ion mobility spectrum filtering for improved analytical sensitivities

Francisco Jose Diaz-Galiano et al.

Summary: The widespread use and high chemical stability of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have resulted in their presence in environmental matrices and human exposure through contaminated food, especially fish. The use of ion mobility coupled to mass spectrometry, which incorporates the collision cross-section (CCS) as an additional descriptor, is particularly relevant in analyzing this large group of substances due to its increased selectivity. This study experimentally obtained the TWCCSN2 values of 24 priority PFAS and evaluated the reproducibility of these measurements over seven weeks, using the average values to critically assess previously reported data and theoretical calculations. This increased selectivity allowed for enhanced sensitivity in detecting PFAS in complex matrices (biota, food, and human serum) by using the drift time associated with each analyte as a filter, reducing interferences and background noise and enabling trace-level detection.

Non-targeted analysis for the screening and semi-quantitative estimates of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances in water samples from South Florida environments

Xuerong Li et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are anthropogenic pollutants that are widely present in surface and drinking water. Non-targeted analysis (NTA) methods based on high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) have been developed to comprehensively characterize PFAS in environmental samples. This study compared NTA workflows using online solid phase extraction-liquid chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry (online SPE-LC-HRMS) in screening PFAS in drinking and surface waters in Southern Florida. Tap water showed the highest number of PFAS features, indicating poor removal or breakdown of PFAS precursors. Furthermore, a semi-quantitation method for NTA (qNTA) was proposed for concentration estimation. NTA plays a crucial role in identifying and prioritizing non-traditionally monitored PFAS to better understand their toxicological and environmental impact.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial patterns and effects of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) on soil microbial communities in the West Taihu Lake Basin of China. The results show that PFASs distribution is influenced by soil properties and specific PFASs substances. Eukaryotic taxa exhibit stronger stability compared to prokaryotes when exposed to PFASs, while PFASs inhibit the functional and structural stability of bacterial and archaeal communities. PFASs also stimulate the trophic transferring efficiencies of autotrophic bacteria to metazoan organisms.

Bioaccumulation, trophic transfer and biomagnification of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in the marine food web of the South China Sea

Summary: Knowledge on bioaccumulation and trophic transfer in food webs is crucial in evaluating contaminant hazards. This study investigated the presence of PFAAs in organisms sampled from Qinzhou Bay in the South China Sea, and found different distribution patterns between short-chain and long-chain PFAAs based on trophic positions. Results suggest a potential biomagnification effect of PFOS, while the effects of PFOA were less clear. Banned long-chain PFAAs were found to still persist in the coastal marine ecosystem, while emerging short-chain PFAAs showed high concentrations but no biomagnification.

The color change analysis of historic wooden remains after fire-suppression by fluorinated chemical gases

Wei Ke et al.

Summary: This study conducted experiments using five traditional fluorinated chemical gases for fire suppression to observe the effects on the surface of historic wooden buildings. It was observed that flame enhancement occurs at the early stage of fire suppression, and the amount of F-deposited on the wooden surface is positively correlated with the total amount of gaseous HF. The influence of HF on color change of the wooden surface depends on the amounts of both gaseous H2O and HF.
