Cutting tool wear minimization in drilling operations of titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V

Mohsen Soori et al.

Summary: Tool wear during drilling operations can cause damage and should be minimized. It affects tool life, dimensional accuracy and surface integrity of the final product. Virtual machining systems are used to predict and minimize tool wear, and optimize drilling parameters.

Investigating hole making performance of Al 2024-T3/Ti-6AI-4V alloy stacks: A comparative study of conventional drilling, peck drilling and helical milling

Jia Ge et al.

Summary: This study compares different hole making methods, including conventional drilling, peck drilling, and helical milling, for Al 2024-T3/Ti-6Al-4V stacks used in aircraft applications. The results show that conventional drilling produces the most severe exit burr, while helical milling produces the least burr. Varying the parameters can effectively reduce burr formation in conventional drilling and peck drilling. Helical milling results in the highest roughness on the Al 2024-T3 hole surface and regular feed marks on the Ti-6Al-4V hole surface.

Modeling and prediction of surface roughness at the drilling of SLM-Ti6Al4V parts manufactured with pre-hole with optimized ANN and ANFIS

Hakan Dedeakayogullari et al.

Summary: This study discusses the modeling of surface roughness (Ra) in drilling Ti6Al4V alloy produced by Selective Laser Melting (SLM) using artificial neural networks (ANN). Evaluation parameters such as drill type, cutting speed, and feed were determined, and the study employed multilayer perceptron (MLP), Learning Vector Quantization (LVQ), and fuzzy-Mamdani methods. The ANN model accurately predicted Ra with an error of 4.9%, demonstrating its ability to determine appropriate drilling parameters for the desired Ra in drilling SLM-Ti6Al4V parts.

A Study of the Effect of Conventional Drilling and Helical Milling in Surface Quality in Titanium Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-6AL-7Nb Alloys for Medical Applications

A. J. Festas et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the surface parameters of holes made in titanium alloys for medical devices using different manufacturing methods, finding that helical milling (HM) performed better than conventional drilling (CD) under lower feed rates and vertical step values. The Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy showed better roughness results compared to Ti-6Al-4V, making it a suitable material for medical devices.
