Long-term analysis of the urban heat island effect using multisource Landsat images considering inter-class differences in land surface temperature products

Xiong Xu et al.

Summary: It is important to quantitatively analyze the long-term temporal and spatial characteristics of the urban heat island (UHI) effect for applications in urban expansion and environmental protection. Remote sensing images from Landsat satellites are widely used due to their high spatial resolution and long time-series data availability. However, differences between multisource sensors, such as Landsat-7 and Landsat-8, can result in apparent deviations in the retrieved land surface temperature (LST) results. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a relationship between LST results from different sensor data for future research on the UHI effect. In this study, a fitting relationship between LST products from Landsat-7 and Landsat-8 images was explored using data obtained from adjacent dates with similar climatic conditions in Shenzhen city.

Developing an intelligent cloud attention network to support global urban green spaces mapping

Yang Chen et al.

Summary: Urban green spaces (UGS) are important for understanding urban ecosystems, climate, environment, and public health. Satellite-derived UGS maps are an efficient tool for urban studies and contribute to global sustainable development goals. However, cloud contamination poses challenges for UGS mapping. In this study, an automatic UGS mapping method using satellite images and crowdsourced geospatial data is proposed to reduce uncertainty caused by clouds. Results show a high-quality global UGS map with average overall accuracy of 92.96%, even with cloud coverage ranging from 0% to 50%.

Response of soil moisture and vegetation conditions in seasonal variation of land surface temperature and surface urban heat island intensity in sub-tropical semi-arid cities

Ahmed Ali Shahfahad et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the seasonal and spatial variations in land surface temperature (LST) and surface urban heat island intensity (SUHII) in eight semi-arid cities in India, and their relationship with soil moisture and vegetation conditions. The results showed that LST and SUHII exhibited significant variations, with higher values during spring and summer seasons and in outskirts areas of the cities. Soil moisture had a stronger impact on SUHII than vegetation conditions.

Exploring spatiotemporal changes of the urban heat Island effect in high-latitude cities at a neighbourhood level: A case of Edmonton, Canada

Nilusha P. Y. Welegedara et al.

Summary: The study examines the variations in surface urban heat islands (SUHIs) in the high-latitude city of Edmonton and their relationship with land surface, anthropogenic heat, and population characteristics. The results show a significant increase in SUHI intensity during spring, summer, and winter over the past two decades. The study also reveals that increasing vegetation cover by up to 20% can reduce current SUHI intensity by one-third, and neighbourhoods with more affluent and better-educated residents experience lower SUHI intensities.

Summary: Urbanization affects the landscape configuration and land use/land cover patterns, leading to changes in the surface urban heat island (SUHI) effect. This study reveals the impacts of land use/land cover changes on SUHI effect in Kunming, China, using satellite remote sensing data and analytical methods. The results show that the explosive growth in impervious surfaces is the main reason for the deterioration of SUHI effect.

Exploring the spatial heterogeneity of urban heat island effect and its relationship to block morphology with the geographically weighted regression model

Yuejing Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between urban morphology and the urban heat island (UHI) effect at the block level using geographically weighted regression (GWR) models. The results showed significant spatial variations of different variables, with impervious surface ratio (ISR) and building density (BD) intensifying the UHI effect while green ratio (GR) forming a cool urban island in dense urban areas. The findings suggest that morphological variables significantly impact the UHI effect, emphasizing the importance of considering spatial context in sustainable urban planning.

Summary: This research analyzed the impact of land use/land cover change on urban heat island intensity and thermal comfort in Delhi from 1991 to 2018 using Landsat datasets and geographically weighted regression. The findings show that the increase in built-up area has led to higher surface temperature and urban heat island intensity, resulting in decreased thermal comfort in the city.

The Seasonality of Surface Urban Heat Islands across Climates

Summary: This study investigates the differences in seasonal hysteresis of Surface Urban Heat Island Intensity (SUHII) across different climates and provides a detailed classification of the daytime and nighttime SUHII hysteresis loops. It shows that the shape of SUHII hysteresis can be concave-up, concave-down, twisted, flat, or triangle-like. Wet climates exhibit a universal concave-up hysteresis during the daytime, while cities in dry climates show a more complex pattern.
