Comparison of Soil Taxonomy (2022) and WRB (2022) Systems for Classifying Paddy Soils with Different Drainage Grades in South Korea

Dan-Bi Lee et al.

Summary: Soil classification is important for understanding soil properties and developing effective strategies for soil utilization and management. However, the differences between the Soil Taxonomy and the World Reference Base for soil resources pose challenges for exchanging classification results. In South Korea, accurate soil classification for paddy soils is difficult due to intensive soil management and variations in soil redox conditions. This study classified two paddy soils using different classification systems and proposed a classification criterion specifically for paddy soils in Korea based on drainage grades.

Urban soils research: SUITMA 10

Zhongqi Cheng et al.

Summary: Research on soils in urban, industrial, traffic, mining, and military areas is crucial, as these soils may pose environmental, ecological, and health risks while being vital components of local ecosystems. Urban soils play a key role in the long-term sustainability and resilience of cities.

Guideline for the description of soils in the Berlin metropolitan area: an extension for surveying and mapping anthropogenic and natural soils in urban environments within the German soil classification system

Mohsen Makki et al.

Summary: In urban areas, anthropogenic activities play a significant role in shaping the soil formation. Despite the inconsistent classification criteria of national soil systems, efforts have been made to develop comprehensive guidelines for describing and mapping urban soils, with a focus on anthropogenic materials in Berlin. This approach is expected to set new benchmarks for urban soil research and mapping, potentially influencing future soil mapping standards in Germany.

Seeing copiaposols: anthropogenic soils, strategic unknowing, and emergent taxonomies in northern Chile

Sebastian Ureta et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of the omission of anthropogenic soils in leading soil taxonomies on the work of soil scientists in northern Chile. By contrasting the USDA/NRCS soil typology with actual field conditions, the limitations of current classification methods become evident. The paper concludes by proposing the concept of emergent taxonomies to better account for the sociopolitical aspects of soil formation.
