Global urban sprawl containment strategies and their implications for rapidly urbanising cities in Ghana

Owusu Amponsah et al.

Summary: Cities in Sub-Saharan Africa have struggled to address urban sprawl sustainably, and the projected population growth in these cities will worsen the situation. This review suggests that successful sprawl containment strategies implemented in developed countries can be adapted to tackle sprawl in Sub-Saharan African cities. Strategies promoting city densification and guiding physical growth are suitable for highly urbanized cities like those in Ghana, while preserving farmland and green spaces are recommended for rapidly urbanizing rural municipalities and districts. Similar land tenure practices and urbanization dynamics across Sub-Saharan African cities make these findings applicable to many other cities within the region. However, the success of sprawl containment strategies depends on addressing land tenure conflicts, strengthening planning institutions, and fostering collaboration among city authorities. Recommendations for addressing these challenges are provided in the discussion.

Advancing the use of the repertory grid technique in the built environment: A systematic review

Rawan Rahman et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review to explore the use of repertory grid technique (RGT) in the built environment field. The review found that while RGT has been recognized as a viable method in other fields, its utilization in the built environment has been extremely limited. However, the review also identified potential opportunities for advancing the use of RGT in the built environment.

Innovating Empirical Research on Legitimacy: Repertory Grid Analysis

Norma Osterberg-Kaufmann

Summary: This article discusses a study on the influence of political knowledge on perceptions of the legitimacy of the European Union, and demonstrates the potential of the repertory grid method in the social sciences. The study tests the effectiveness of the repertory grid method in surveying attitudes towards contested concepts, such as legitimacy, and develops possible research questions in this underdeveloped field. The preliminary study findings show an increasing importance of democratic norms and values in evaluating the legitimacy of national and European institutions, but also an increasing critique of the political system and a decrease in perceived legitimacy.

Determinants of adoption of multiple sustainable agricultural practices among smallholder farmers in Nigeria

Zainab Oyetunde-Usman et al.

Summary: This study examines the factors influencing the adoption of Sustainable Agricultural Practices (SAPs) in Nigeria using data from the 2015 General Household Survey, finding that adoption rates depend significantly on factors such as age of household head, gender, education, household size, access to extension services, and household wealth status. The results suggest that policymakers should focus on maintaining or increasing household asset bases and encouraging training programs to promote the adoption of SAPs.

Summary: The study shows that mountain farming communities in Pakistan are facing challenges such as rural-to-urban migration and growth in the non-farm sector, which threaten agricultural sustainability. Factors influencing farm succession and future occupational choices of potential successors include farmer and farm characteristics, as well as agricultural income. Policies targeting local income improvement and investment in skill-building and infrastructure development can help support farm sustenance.

Scaling up agriculture? The dynamics of land transfer in inland China

Sarah Rogers et al.

Summary: Major changes are occurring in the Chinese countryside, driven by a range of policies, regulations, and financial instruments towards larger-scale, more commercialized, and industrialized agriculture. Despite limited land transfer from smallholders to other operators based on national statistics, a survey focusing on apple, tea, orange, and coffee-growing areas reveals that the transfer of land is not widespread, highlighting the viability of specialized smallholder farming.

Impact of farming systems on soil ecological quality: a meta-analysis

Amelie Christel et al.

Summary: The productivist model post World War II improved food production but negatively impacted soil ecology. Alternative farming systems like organic and biodynamic farming show higher soil ecological quality, while soil conservation farming needs further research. Organic fertilization and longer crop rotations are beneficial practices, while pesticides and soil tillage are detrimental.
