Validation of Satellite Rainfall Estimates over Equatorial East Africa

Simon Ageet et al.

Summary: This study evaluates gauge-calibrated satellite rainfall estimates (SREs) using a unique daily rainfall dataset from equatorial East Africa. The results show that SREs reproduce the annual rainfall pattern and seasonal rainfall cycle well, but exhibit biases. IMERG performs best at shorter temporal scales, while MSWEPv2.2 and CHIRPS perform best at monthly and annual time steps, respectively. All the SREs miss a significant number of daily extreme rainfall events.

Evaluation of multiple satellite precipitation products for rainfed maize production systems over Vietnam

Sridhar Gummadi et al.

Summary: High-resolution reliable rainfall datasets are crucial for various applications. This study evaluated five widely used operational satellite rainfall estimates and found that CHIRP/S products outperformed the others in terms of skill, bias, correlation coefficient, and error. The results suggest that satellite rainfall estimates have the potential to overcome data scarcity issues in regions with sparse rain gauges.

Reliability of the ERA5 in Replicating Mean and Extreme Temperatures across Europe

Kondylia Velikou et al.

Summary: ERA5 is widely considered as a valid proxy of observation at region scales. It performs well in climate investigation over Europe, capturing the annual cycle and mean and extreme temperatures effectively. However, it underestimates temperatures in certain European sub-regions, possibly due to altitude differences between grid points and stations. Compared to other datasets, ERA5 exhibits more extreme temperatures in some regions.

Summary: Quantifying uncertainties in water resource prediction is crucial for data-scarce regions. This study uses globally available datasets to regionalize model parameters in Ethiopia and finds that stable parameter sets provide the most robust estimates. The approach can be applied to other data-scarce regions.

Summary: The study assesses the performance of CHIRTS-daily dataset in Africa and finds that it outperforms ERA5 and ERA5-Land in estimating daily, annual mean, and annual extreme maximum temperatures. Although there are biases in the estimation of minimum temperatures, they could potentially be corrected.

Evaluation of Global Precipitation Products over Wabi Shebelle River Basin, Ethiopia

Kindie Engdaw Tadesse et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of three global precipitation products and their downscaled versions in water resource management, climate, and hydrological applications. The downscaled precipitation products outperform the raw estimates in statistical indicators, with CHIRPS-D performing the best at a monthly timestep and PERSIANN_CDR_D showing relatively good performance at both daily and monthly timesteps. Spatial mismatch analysis highlights the importance of considering the position of gauge stations in providing accurate spatial rainfall estimates. Overall, TAMSATv3 and CHIRPSv2 and their downscaled versions show good performance at daily and monthly timesteps, respectively, while PERSIANN_CDR performs best with low Pbias and high POD values.

Evaluation and Comparison of Satellite-Derived Estimates of Rainfall in the Diverse Climate and Terrain of Central and Northeastern Ethiopia

Summary: This study evaluates and compares various satellite rainfall estimates with ground-observed data in central and northeastern parts of Ethiopia. The results show that different SREs exhibit varying trends and efficiencies under different elevations and terrains. Further analysis suggests that SREs can be alternative options for rainfall frequency, flood, and drought monitoring studies, with potential need for bias corrections to improve data quality.

Performance evaluation of multiple satellite rainfall products for Dhidhessa River Basin (DRB), Ethiopia

Gizachew Kabite Wedajo et al.

Summary: Precipitation plays a vital role in hydrological processes and its spatiotemporal variability is difficult to characterize accurately. Ground-based rainfall measurement is more precise but installing a dense gauging network is impractical. Satellite-based rainfall estimates offer good alternatives, but come with uncertainties. This study evaluated the performance of various SRE products for the DRB, with CHIRPS2 showing the best results. Hydrological simulations revealed sensitivity to rainfall datasets and the dominance of subsurface processes in the basin, especially groundwater flux. CHIRPS2 and IMERG6 products are reliable data sources for hydrological analysis in the DRB, with climatic season affecting rainfall and streamflow estimation.
