Wildfire and degradation accelerate northern peatland carbon release

S. L. Wilkinson et al.

Summary: The northern peatland carbon sink is important for climate regulation but its future is uncertain due to changing peatland and wildfire interactions. Using empirical data, this study models net ecosystem exchange and methane fluxes in natural, degraded, and restored peatlands in non-permafrost regions. Wildfire reduced carbon uptake in pristine peatlands by 35% and increased emissions from degraded peatlands by 10%. Climate change accelerated carbon losses, with increased burn rate and severity reducing the carbon sink by 38% and 65% by 2100. However, active peatland restoration can potentially mitigate these impacts.

Ongoing Fen-Bog Transition in a Boreal Aapa Mire Inferred from Repeated Field Sampling, Aerial Images, and Landsat Data

Tiina H. M. Kolari et al.

Summary: The northern aapa mire complexes are undergoing significant changes in ecosystem, with decrease in flark area, increase in Sphagnum mosses and deep-rooted vascular plants. The use of aerial image analysis, vegetation surveys, and satellite imagery analysis can effectively monitor these changes. The observed increase in Sphagnum mosses supports the interpretation of ongoing fen-bog transitions in the Northern European aapa mires, indicating significant ecosystem-scale changes.

Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Structure-From-Motion (SfM) for Monitoring the Changed Flow Paths and Wetness in Minerotrophic Peatland Restoration

Lauri Ikkala et al.

Summary: Peatland restoration aims to recover dispersed wetness, water quality, biodiversity and carbon sequestration by achieving pristine water pathway conditions. This study introduces a method using unmanned aircraft system and light detection and ranging data to reveal the hydrological impacts of elevation changes in peatlands due to restoration. The impacts were assessed by analyzing flow accumulation and wetness index. The results showed that the method is accurate enough to describe primary elevation changes and the restoration was successful in increasing wetness and improving flow dispersion.

Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity in Northern Peats Inferred From Other Measurements

P. J. Morris et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis of northern peat samples and developed linear models to predict peat saturated hydraulic conductivity (K-sat) based on other variables such as depth, dry bulk density, humification, surface microform type, and peatland trophic type. The models showed that K-sat decreases with increasing depth and dry bulk density, while it increases along the trophic gradient. Dry bulk density and humification were found to be particularly important predictors. The models allow for improved estimation of peat K-sat using simpler, cheaper measurements.

Overriding water table control on managed peatland greenhouse gas emissions

C. D. Evans et al.

Summary: This study shows that the depth of the water table is the main factor influencing greenhouse gas fluxes in peatlands. By lowering the water table depth by 10 cm, emissions of CO2 and CH4 can be reduced by the equivalent of at least 3 tonnes of CO2 per hectare per year, until the water table depth is less than 30 cm.

Peatland subsidence enhances cultivated lowland flood risk

Lauri Ikkala et al.

Summary: This study combined historical soil elevation data and new lidar data to investigate subsidence in riparian peatland on the west coast of Finland, revealing an average subsidence rate of 5.15-9.47 mm per year within the last 24-51 years. The results suggest that the increasing flooding of cultivated fields is mainly attributed to soil subsidence near rivers, rather than increased flooding occurrence in river systems.

Summary: The study compared the differences between airborne LiDAR and UAV structure from motion digital surface models, finding the greatest discrepancies in forest areas and minor differences in sparse vegetation regions. The research highlights the importance of understanding the differences between these DSM types for various land cover types.
