Quantifying coal rib stability and support requirements using bonded block modeling and reliability analysis based on the random set theory

Maurice Sunkpal et al.

Summary: A flaw in geomechanical analysis is the use of single value parameters in numerical models, overlooking the inherent variability in rock mass. This study employs the Random Set Theory and Bonded Block Modeling to determine coal rib stability and support requirements, considering the uncertainties in the input parameters. The RS-BBM approach proves to be an efficient tool in determining the likely bounds of coal rib performance.

Evaluating the Effect of Overburden Depth, Mining Height, and Support Density on Coal Rib Damage Using DEM Modeling

Maurice Sunkpal et al.

Summary: There has been a global effort to understand the mechanics involved in the stability of coal mine ribs, especially in major coal-producing countries. Buckling and spalling of mine ribs have been found to affect their stability and degradation. The generation, propagation, and coalescence of cracks in mine pillar ribs are significantly influenced by overburden depths and in situ stress magnitudes. Understanding the dynamics of rib behavior can improve rib control practices. This study assessed the effect of mining depth, mining height, and supports on coal mine rib stability using distinct element modeling.

Exploring the Deformation Mechanics of Coal Ribs Using the Distinct Element Modeling Approach

Maurice Sunkpal et al.

Summary: Improving understanding of rib failure mechanisms using DEM technique was the main goal of the investigation. The study found that rib failure process initiated with tensile and shear cracks which coalesced to form predominantly sub-parallel tensile fractures. The depth of fracture and softening for different rib scenarios were also measured.

Modeling the behavior of a coal pillar rib using Bonded Block Models with emphasis on ground-support interaction

Sankhaneel Sinha et al.

Summary: Rib spalling is a major hazard in the mining industry, and accidents continue to occur in the absence of coal rib support guidelines. By employing Bonded Block Models (BBMs) to simulating supported coal pillars, there is potential for developing a support design tool to address this issue.

Preliminary rib support requirements for solid coal ribs using a coal pillar rib rating (CPRR)

Khaled Mohamed et al.

Summary: NIOSH researchers are developing a coal pillar rib rating technique to evaluate the integrity and stability of coal ribs by measuring their composition and influencing factors. The CPRR is obtained by measuring four parameters: rib homogeneity, bedding condition, face cleat orientation, and rib height. This technique can be used as a rib quality mapping tool in underground coal mines to determine rib stability and support requirements.

Summary: The study proposes an integrated 3D continuum-two-dimensional discontinuum approach for simulating rock pillars. By incorporating measured support and load paths into the simulation, the research investigates how support and load paths influence damage evolution in the pillar.
