A cross-sectional study of hepatitis C prevalence and correlates among persons who inject drugs in rural and non-rural communities

Meredith A. Barranco et al.

Summary: This study compared the prevalence of HCV and its risk factors among PWID in rural and non-rural communities in Upstate New York. The results showed that HCV burden is higher in rural communities, possibly due to greater levels of methamphetamine injection. Ongoing surveillance and improving access to harm reduction services are crucial to respond to the changing opioid epidemic landscape.

The practice and embodiment of goofballs : A qualitative study exploring the co-injection of methamphetamines and opioids

Andrew Ivsins et al.

Summary: This study explores the practice and embodied experiences of goofball injecting. The analysis shows that goofball injection is a complex drug use practice driven by the desire to achieve particular embodied experiences not attainable by using either drug individually. This study fills an important gap in the polysubstance use literature specifically exploring the co-injection of methamphetamines and opioids.

Factors that influence enrollment in syringe services programs in rural areas: a qualitative study among program clients in Appalachian Kentucky

Umedjon Ibragimov et al.

Summary: Stigma emerges as the main barrier to SSP enrollment for PWID in rural areas, stemming from internalized shame and fear of anticipated stigma from various societal groups. SSPs can mitigate stigma by offering low threshold services and protective measures, while also leveraging PWID networks to promote enrollment. Individual characteristics, such as child custody or employment, can influence susceptibility to drug-related stigma and delay SSP registration.

Harm Reduction and Adaptations Among PWUD in Rural Oregon During COVID-19

Andrew Seaman et al.

Summary: The study found that COVID-19 has influenced substance use and harm reduction practices among people who use drugs (PWUD) in rural communities, with suggestions for need-based exchange, increased syringe delivery services, and encouraging secondary exchange among PWUD. More rapid policy and practice changes are urgently needed to improve harm reduction practices and prevent HIV/HCV and COVID-19 transmission.
