Summary: This article discusses four paradigm shifts in boundary and border studies, from the delimitation of the Durand line as the Indo-Afghan frontier to the current networked assemblage of the EU's external border. Scholars draw ideal types from paradigmatic borders of their times, either accepting or contesting the values anchored in them.
