The Discontents of Truth & Trust in 21st Century America

Sheila Jasanoff

Summary: Credible policy-making requires the same legitimating moves as credible politics, where experts represent diverse standpoints, aggregate opinions, and bridge gaps between knowledge and reality. Expert practices must conform to culturally recognized approaches to knowledge production and testing. Trust in knowledge and power can be restored through inclusive policy framing, attention to dissenting voices, and humility in acknowledging the limitations of science and the needs of vulnerable populations.
