Clinical and laboratory evaluation of sicca complaints: distinctive aspects of primary, secondary and non-Sjogren syndrome

Fabiola Reis de Oliveira et al.

Summary: This study describes and compares data from individuals with Sjogren Syndrome (SS) and non-Sjogren Syndrome (NSS), identifying specific features and sub-groups within the primary SS (pSS) and secondary SS (sSS) groups. The diagnosis of SS remains a challenge, with up to 31% of suspected cases having other conditions associated with the symptoms.

Is it possible to not perform salivary gland biopsy in targeted patients according to unstimulated salivary flow results in patients with suspected Sjogren's syndrome?

Agata Sebastian et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the utility of unstimulated salivary flow test in screening patients suspected with primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS). Results showed that UWS rates were significantly lower in pSS patients compared to the control group, but no significant association was found between UWS and focus score, as well as anti-SSA antibodies. The study concluded that labial salivary gland biopsy should be performed in all suspected pSS cases, regardless of UWS rate value, rather than solely relying on UWS measurements.

Go Ask Your Patients! PSS-QoL Reported Perception of Dryness Correlates With Lacrimal and Salivary Flow in Primary Sjogren's Syndrome

Angelika Lackner et al.

Summary: The study found that patients' perception of dryness assessed by PSS-QoL correlates with objective measurements of salivary gland function, while ESSPRI-dryness did not. Based on PSS-QoL and objective measures of dryness, two distinct groups of PSS patients could be distinguished, which may have implications in daily practice and future clinical studies.
