Oren Herscu et al.

Summary: This study presents the first treatment trial for maladaptive daydreaming (MD). An eight-session internet-based self-help training for mindfulness and self-monitoring was found to significantly improve daydreaming pathology, frequency, and life functioning in individuals with MD. The Mediating Role of Dissociation and Shame in the Relationship Between Emotional Trauma and Maladaptive Daydreaming

Erika Ferrante et al.

Summary: This study examined the role of emotional trauma, shame, and dissociation in maladaptive daydreaming (MD). The findings suggested that dissociation and shame fully mediated the relationship between emotional trauma and MD severity. These results highlight the importance of clinical interventions addressing shame and the tendency to engage in daydreaming as a coping mechanism for individuals with MD.

Daily Feelings and the Affective Valence of Daydreams in Maladaptive Daydreaming: A Longitudinal Analysis

Hildy Wen et al.

Summary: This study found that individuals with higher levels of depression and daydream intensity experience greater levels of negative emotions after daydreaming. Individuals who daydream to cope with negative memories, feelings, and realities usually experience more negative emotions, while those who daydream about enjoyable pastimes and wish fulfillment typically experience more positive emotions. Enjoyment of the daydreams and perceived control of life also play a role in the emotions experienced by individuals with maladaptive daydreaming.

Maladaptive Daydreaming and Its Relationship with Psychopathological Symptoms, Emotion Regulation, and Problematic Social Networking Sites Use: a Network Analysis Approach

Ilaria Chirico et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationships between maladaptive daydreaming, psychopathological symptoms, emotion regulation strategies, and problematic social networking sites use. The results showed that individuals with maladaptive daydreaming had higher scores on all study variables, except cognitive reappraisal, compared to non-maladaptive daydreamers. The network structures of individuals with maladaptive daydreaming were significantly different from those without maladaptive daydreaming. These findings suggest that maladaptive daydreaming may be a clinical condition associated with psychopathology and problematic social networking sites use.

Maladaptive Daydreaming and Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms: A confirmatory and exploratory investigation of shared mechanisms

Gabrielle Salomon-Small et al.

Summary: Maladaptive Daydreaming (MD) is a newly proposed mental disorder characterized by excessive, vivid fantasy activity impairing functioning, with a high comorbidity with Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Symptoms (OCSS). Dissociation and sense of control significantly mediate the MD-OCSS association, and MD is more strongly related to obsessions than compulsions. Commonly endorsed obsessions and compulsions among MD participants include checking and repetition compulsions, intrusive obsessions, and body-related obsessions and compulsions.
