Antibacterial Effect of Carbon Nanomaterials: Nanotubes, Carbon Nanofibers, Nanodiamonds, and Onion-like Carbon

Summary: The increasing resistance of bacteria and fungi to antibiotics poses a significant health threat to humanity. Carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) have potential for biomedical applications, but there is a lack of standardized methods for evaluating their antimicrobial properties. This study compared the antimicrobial activity of various CNMs against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, and found that certain types of CNMs exhibited high efficacy. Scanning electron microscopy results revealed differences in the mechanisms of action between different types of CNMs.

Novel Microbial Palladium Nanoparticles with a High Photothermal Effect for Antibacterial Applications

Summary: Biocompatible palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) were synthesized by microorganisms Bacillus megaterium Y-4. Ultrasonication treatment enhances the absorption in NIR regions and the photothermal conversion efficiency of the Pd NPs. The resulting material exhibits excellent biocompatibility and antibacterial activity, achieving a disinfection efficiency of 99.99% against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in less than 10 minutes with a low dosage of Pd NPs (20 mg/L).

Enhanced degradation of polyethylene terephthalate plastics by CdS/CeO2 heterojunction photocatalyst activated peroxymonosulfate

Summary: In this study, CdS/CeO2 was used as a photocatalyst to promote the degradation of PET-12 plastics by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) synergistic photocatalytic system. The experiments showed that 10% CdS/CeO2 exhibited the best performance under illumination, achieving a weight loss rate of 93.92% for PET-12 with 3 mM PMS. The effects of important parameters and co-existing anions on PET-12 degradation were systematically studied, and the superior performance of the photocatalytic-activated PMS system was verified through comparison experiments. The gas products detected during the process indicated the potential for further reduction to hydrocarbon fuel.

This material, consisting of metal oxide nanomaterials, photosensitizers, and conductive polymers, achieved bidirectional transfer of hot-electrons under near-infrared light irradiation, increasing the carrier concentration and enhancing the chemical activity and photothermal conversion efficiency. The newly developed material showed high sterilization efficacy against Escherichia coli.

Cobalt Phthalocyanine Supported on Mesoporous CeO2 as an Active Molecular Catalyst for CO Oxidation

Summary: This study immobilized cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) molecules on a Ce-based metal-organic framework (Ce-BTC) and converted it to mesoporous CeO2, achieving molecular-level dispersion of CoPc on the surface of CeO2. The resulting CoPc/CeO2 catalysts showed good CO oxidation performance. The mixing manner of Ce-BTC and CoPc significantly affected the physicochemical properties and catalytic performance, indicating the promising potential of Ce-BTC-mediated CoPc loading strategy for heterogenization of catalytic biomolecules.

In this study, a NIR-II window triple-mode synergetic antibacterial nanoplatform was developed based on the good photothermal properties of Copper sulfide (CuS) nanoparticles under near infrared (NIR) laser. The nanoplatform showed effective bacterial killing with the combination of positive charge on the surface, chemical sterilization induced by vancomycin, and strong photothermal effect. The nanoplatform also exhibited good biocompatibility, making it a promising candidate for antibacterial applications.

Porous, Oxygen Vacancy Enhanced CeO2-x Microspheres with Efficient Enzyme-Mimetic and Photothermal Properties

Summary: Porous and defective gray cerium oxide microspheres with multifunctional enzyme-like activities were synthesized by reducing monodisperse-porous cerium oxide microspheres. The microspheres had higher Ce(III) atomic fraction, more oxygen vacancy, and lower oxygen content on the surface. The band gap energy was smaller for the microspheres, indicating enhanced light adsorption. The microspheres exhibited superior enzyme-like activity for the detection of nitrite and could generate reactive oxygen species. Additionally, the microspheres had a photothermal response under laser irradiation.
