Influences of extrinsic factors on the Luders-type deformation behaviour of NiTi

Yingchao Li et al.

Summary: NiTi shape memory alloys exhibit Luders-type deformation in tension. We propose a new explanation of the mechanism of this behaviour based on a mechanical criterion of sample length change conservation among three contributions, including machine displacement, Luders band elongation and elastic strain contraction, and established a mathematical model to describe the behaviour.

Martensitic phase transformation induced large elastic lattice strains in Nb3Sn lamellae in NiTi-Nb3Sn eutectic composite

Yingchao Li et al.

Summary: By utilizing the principles of lattice strain matching and collective atomic load transfer, ultralarge elastic strains were induced in a brittle NiTi-Nb3Sn eutectic composite, where Nb3Sn lamellae achieved a remarkable elastic lattice strain of -2.4%. This study both tests the applicability of lattice strain matching in brittle materials and explores a novel fabrication approach for in-situ composites via eutectic solidification.

Heat Source Reconstruction and Its Relationship with Functional Fatigue of Pseudoelastic NiTi Ribbons

Ignacio Bustos et al.

Summary: In this study, the local and global effects of functional fatigue of pseudoelastic NiTi ribbons were investigated using digital image correlation and infrared thermography. The in situ full-field techniques allowed for a detailed characterization of strain field inhomogeneities, recoverable strains, and fronts geometry, providing a comprehensive understanding of the global effects of functional fatigue. The heat source reconstruction procedure revealed a strong linear correlation between the calculated heat source and measured local strain rate during the inhomogeneous deformation stages. This correlation was lost as the cycling progresses, indicating the presence of a spatial or temporal lag. Energy balances and latent heats were determined using an alternative method. The experimental data also validated a thermomechanical model for pseudoelastic NiTi wires.

Luders band evolution in geometrically graded NiTi plates

Bashir S. Shariat et al.

Summary: This study examines the formation and propagation process of Luders bands in parallel-graded NiTi samples during stress-induced martensitic transformation. Digital image correlation is used to measure the full-field strain. The samples with varying width profiles experience progressively increasing load and continuous variation of width during the transformation process. The size of the Luders band front transition zone remains constant, but the local strain rate varies. The transition zone of the forward transformation is wider and has a lower strain rate compared to the reverse transformation.

A mechanical criterion for Luders-type deformation of polycrystalline NiTi

Yingchao Li et al.

Summary: NiTi shape memory alloys exhibit Luders-type deformation due to stress-induced martensitic transformation. Various explanations have been proposed, but they contradict experimental evidence. In this study, a new model based on the conservation of sample length changes, crosshead movement, and elastic contraction is proposed and verified through experiments and measurements. The new model can describe the upper-lower yielding phenomenon and the plateau stress in Luders-type deformation behavior.

Intrinsic response of nanocrystalline superelastic NiTi shape memory alloy

Zhihao Zhao et al.

Summary: The superelasticity of nanocrystalline NiTi alloys originates from stress-induced martensitic transformation, which may exhibit strain localization. Measuring the intrinsic response during the reverse transformation is difficult, hindering analysis of localized phase transformation phenomena. This study proposes a novel experimental methodology to extract the complete intrinsic response of SMAs and applies it to nanocrystalline superelastic NiTi, providing insights into the deformation mechanisms and paving the way for accurate analysis and design of relevant structures.

Shear strain evolution during tension-induced Luders-type deformation of polycrystalline NiTi plates

Bashir S. Shariat et al.

Summary: This paper reports a new aspect of Luders-type deformation in NiTi, specifically the occurrence of lateral shear strains during tension-induced Luders deformation. Through digital image correlation analysis, it was found that lateral shear strains occurred in opposite directions within the Luders band, as a means of self-accommodating the lateral displacement caused by the shear strains. Additionally, the propagation of the Luders band changed from a single band mode to a branched mode when the lateral displacement and in-plane bending moment became too large. These findings provide more insight into the characteristics of Luders deformation in NiTi.

Interactions between martensitic NiTi shape memory alloy and Nb nanowires in composite wire during tensile deformation

Xiangguang Kong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interactions between martensitic NiTi shape memory alloy and Nb nanowires in composite wire during tensile loading. The results show that Nb nanowires have significant influence on the transformation behavior and texture evolution of NiTi matrix, as well as the load transfer among martensite variants. The existence of densely distributed Nb nanowires also leads to increased internal stress in NiTi matrix and negative axial lattice stresses in unfavored martensite variants.
