Primary systemic sclerosis heart involvement: A systematic literature review and preliminary data-driven, consensus-based WSF/HFA definition

Cosimo Bruni et al.

Summary: By conducting a literature review and gathering expert opinions, a consensus-based definition for primary heart involvement in systemic sclerosis was successfully created. This definition was tested and partially validated using 16 clinical cases to assess its feasibility and effectiveness.

Takotsubo Syndrome: Pathophysiology, Emerging Concepts, and Clinical Implications

Trisha Singh et al.

Summary: “Takotsubo syndrome is an acute condition with transient dysfunction of the left ventricle, which is challenging to differentiate from acute myocardial infarction. Recent studies have shown that patients with this syndrome have persistent cardiac dysfunction and limiting symptoms. They also have a substantial burden of morbidity and mortality, similar to patients with acute coronary syndrome. The underlying pathophysiology of this condition remains unclear, and further research is needed to inform evidence-based management strategies.”

Takotsubo syndrome and rheumatic diseases - a critical systematic review

Weiqin Lin et al.

Summary: Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is an acute cardiac condition triggered by physical or emotional stress, believed to be related to catecholamine surge. Animal models of TTS show neutrophil infiltration and subsequent ingress of macrophages mediating inflammatory changes. Rheumatological conditions may impact TTS and require further investigation.

Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy: Current Treatment

John E. Madias

Summary: The management of TTS is currently empirical and supportive, with therapies being extrapolated from principles used for other cardiovascular diseases. While the pathophysiology of TTS remains elusive, treatment strategies may be targeted at addressing common consequences shared with coronary artery disease and other cardiovascular disorders. New therapeutic hypotheses are being considered based on animal studies and limited patient applications.
