Wear Reduction via CNT Coatings in Electrical Contacts Subjected to Fretting

Bruno Alderete et al.

Summary: Carbon nanotubes (CNT) exhibit exceptional mechanical, transport, and optical properties, making them highly attractive to researchers. They also possess excellent lubricating capabilities and electrical conductivity, making them promising solid lubricants in electrical contacts. In this study, three different CNT coatings were deposited on copper platelets and characterized for their electrical resistance during fretting wear, wear protection, chemical composition of fretting marks, and the effects of CNT coating thickness, duration, normal load, and humidity. Thicker CNT coatings provide better wear protection and maintain similar electrical behavior to uncoated copper, or even improve electrical resistance. The compaction of the porous CNT coating is important for optimal electrical performance under low humidity conditions. Longer fretting tests result in displacement of the coatings, but they still offer improved electrical resistance compared to uncoated samples. Thicker CNT coatings can withstand higher loads during fretting due to increased lubricant reservoir, with carbonaceous tribofilm remaining at the contacting interface after 5,000 fretting cycles regardless of normal load.

Summary: This study investigates Cu-based composites alloyed with Ni and reinforced with CNTs fabricated via powder metallurgy under pressureless sintering methodology and vacuum. The addition of Ni reduces the chemical incompatibilities between Cu and CNT, leading to improved electrical conduction, particularly in samples containing 0.5 wt% CNT and 3 wt% Ni.

Characterization and electrical analysis of carbon-based solid lubricant coatings

Bruno Alderete et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the potential use of carbon nanoparticle coatings applied via electrophoretic deposition over copper substrates for electrical connectors. The coatings reduce wear, require lower insertion forces, protect the connectors, and reduce the overall resistance of the system. Carbon nanotubes and nanohorns show the highest potential with their solid lubricating capabilities and low resistance values.
