Cementitious nanocomposites engineered with high-oxidized graphene oxide: Spotting the nano to macro correlation

Mehdi Chougan et al.

Summary: There is a growing interest in using nanosized fillers, such as graphene oxide (GO), in cement-based construction materials to enhance mechanical properties. The interaction between GO and cement can significantly improve the macroproperties of cement. A GO water suspension was selected for its reproducibility and environmental safety. Various tests, including morphological characterization and mechanical property evaluation, were performed on samples with different dosages of GO. Results showed that an extra-low dosage of GO (0.01%) exhibited the most promising enhancement in mechanical strength.

Effects of Hybrid Graphene Oxide-Nanosilica on Calcium Silicate Hydrate in the Simulation Environment and Cement

Xia Miao et al.

Summary: This research investigates the synergistic reinforcing mechanisms of chemically combined graphene oxide and nanosilica in the structure of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gels compared with physically combined graphene oxide/nanosilica. The results confirm that chemically deposited nanosilica on the graphene oxide surface forms a coating to prevent aggregation, leading to better dispersion compared to physically combined graphene oxide/nanosilica. The incorporation of chemically combined graphene oxide/nanosilica enhances the compressive strength and improves the microstructure of cement.

A critical review of carbon materials engineered electrically conductive cement concrete and its potential applications

Dong Lu et al.

Summary: Carbon materials engineered electrically conductive cement concrete (ECCC) is prepared by adding carbon-based conductive filler into the cement matrix, which gives it high conductivity and strain/stress sensitivity. ECCC has various applications such as snow and ice melting, ohmic heating, cathodic protection system, electromagnetic shielding, structural health monitoring, and traffic detection. This paper provides a systematic review on the development and applications of ECCC, focusing on the progress made in the past decade (2012-2022). It discusses the composition, manufacture, electrical performance, potential applications, and remaining challenges for future research.

Toward clima-resilient ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC): A survey on high-strength mortars engineered with extra-low dosage graphene-based materials (GBMs)

Francesca Romana Lamastra et al.

Summary: The latest research has shown that ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) has the potential to meet the requirements of future civil infrastructure. Nanofillers have been proven to enhance the performance of UHPC in terms of economic and environmental sustainability and also introduce novel features. In this study, mortars based on Portland cement CEM I 52.5 N were engineered with extra-low dosage graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) or nanographite (nG). The addition of GNPs had a positive impact on the hardened mortars, while nG-engineered mortars suffered from uneven dispersion and decreased mechanical strength.

Tailoring Anti-Impact Properties of Ultra-High Performance Concrete by Incorporating Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes

Jialiang Wang et al.

Summary: This study aims to enhance the reinforcement effect of functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the impact properties of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). Functionalized CNTs can break coordination bonds in the C-S-H gel, control the crystallization process and microscopic morphology of hydration products, and modify the pore structure of UHPC, leading to improved dynamic compressive strength, peak strain, impact toughness, and impact dissipation energy.

Functionalization as a way to enhance dispersion of carbon nanotubes in matrices: a review

L. Lavagna et al.

Summary: Three decades of scientific scrutiny on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have shown that challenges in handling and dispersing CNTs, as well as their limited interaction with other materials due to their structure, can impact technological applications. A thorough understanding of CNT properties and selecting appropriate dispersion procedures are essential for achieving desired nanocomposite properties. Advanced knowledge on CNT synthesis, functionalization methods, and dispersion techniques is crucial for addressing these challenges.

Mechanical properties of graphene nanoplatelets-reinforced concrete prepared with different dispersion techniques

Zhangfan Jiang et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates the effects of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) on the mechanical properties of cementitious composites with coarse aggregates. Different dispersion methods including high shear mixing and ultrasonication are studied to disperse GNPs in water. Results show that the use of ultrasonication together with high shear mixing leads to the smallest size graphene sheets. Adding 0.025% GNPs can increase compressive strength by up to 17% in concrete mixtures without significant impact on flexural strength.
