Magnesium based implants for functional bone tissue regeneration - A review

Gavish Uppal et al.

Summary: Magnesium has emerged as a promising biomaterial for bone tissue regeneration and support due to its biodegradability, mechanical properties similar to human bone, osteoconductive nature, and anti-bacterial properties. However, its rapid bio-corrosion is a major concern, which can be addressed through alloying and surface coatings to improve mechanical integrity and degradation rate of magnesium-based implants.

Effect of the Ca2Mg6Zn3 Phase on the Corrosion Behavior of Biodegradable Mg-4.0Zn-0.2Mn-xCa Alloys in Hank's Solution

Junjian Fu et al.

Summary: The effect of the Ca2Mg6Zn3 phase on the corrosion behavior of biodegradable Mg-4.0Zn-0.2Mn-xCa alloys was studied. The volume fraction of the Ca2Mg6Zn3 phase increased with increasing Ca content, while the phase spacing decreased. The intragranular spherical Ca2Mg6Zn3 phase had a higher Volta potential than the dendritic Ca2Mg6Zn3 phase. The Ca2Mg6Zn3 phase acted as a cathode to accelerate corrosion.

Effect of hybrid reinforcement on microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ61 magnesium alloy processed by stir casting method

Song-Jeng Huang et al.

Summary: The present study found that adding alumina and silicon carbide nanoparticles to AZ61 magnesium alloys can improve the microstructure of the alloy and enhance its hardness, tensile, and compressive strength. The optimal performance was observed when the SiC reinforcement content reached 1wt% in the hybrid composite.
