Summary: This research investigates the influence of street aspect ratio, street orientation, and greenery parameters on the microclimate and outdoor thermal comfort of street canyons in Chongqing city. The findings reveal that the aspect ratio and orientation of urban canyons, as well as the aspect ratio of trees, significantly affect microclimate variables at the pedestrian level. The study also shows an inverse relationship between the street aspect ratio and T-mrt and identifies the highest wind velocity when the aspect ratio is 2 and 3. East-West streets and canyons with an aspect ratio of 0.5 experience the warmest thermal conditions and longest extreme discomfort durations. Additionally, variations in leaf area density have a smaller impact on the results compared to the other parameters.

Green roofs and green walls layouts for improved urban air quality by mitigating particulate matter

Margareth Viecco et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that green infrastructures such as green roofs and green walls play a positive role in improving urban air quality, but their effectiveness depends on building height, surrounding urban infrastructure, vegetation cover, and proximity to pollutant sources. Specifically, a coverage of 50%-75% green roofs on buildings lower than 10 meters can improve air quality at the pedestrian/commuter level, while just 25% coverage of green walls yields the highest PM2.5 capture. The combined use of green roofs and green walls could reduce PM2.5 up to 7.3% in Santiago compared to the base case scenario.

Summary: This review assesses the suitability of green infrastructure (GI) in street canyons for air quality improvement, highlighting green walls, green screens, and green roofs as potentially viable options in existing street canyons where planting space is limited. Deposition of pollutants on leaves is an important factor influencing the effectiveness of plant species in mitigating pollution, with micromorphological leaf traits such as grooves, ridges, trichomes, stomatal density, and epicuticular wax amount positively correlating with deposition. Further research is needed to substantiate the efficacy of green walls and green screens in street canyons.
