Truancy: The relevance of resilience-related internal assets, student engagement and perception of school success in youth living with parents and in residential care

Summary: This study aimed to understand the protective factors for truancy, including resilience-related internal assets, student engagement, and perception of school success. It also investigated whether there were differences in these variables between students living in residential care and those living with their parents. The findings showed that students in residential care had more unexcused absences, grade retentions, higher depression levels, and lower student engagement. Additionally, the perception of school success and resilience-related internal assets significantly contributed to truancy.

Temporary environmental migration and child truancy: An investigation among hard-to-reach families in Bangladesh

Summary: Parental temporary migration can be a suitable policy to mitigate household adversities caused by climatic shocks, but its effect on child schooling is uncertain. This study focuses on hard-to-reach populations and investigates how environmental shocks lead to child absenteeism. The research findings suggest an ambiguous impact of parental temporary migration on child truancy for disadvantaged families facing natural calamities. Policies are needed to protect these children from hazardous labor and ensure their access to education.

Bullying and truancy amongst school-going adolescents in Timor-Leste: results from the 2015 global school-based health survey

Summary: This study aimed to examine the association between bullying and truancy among school-going adolescents in Timor-Leste. The results showed that school-going adolescents who experienced bullying were more likely to be truant, and those who currently used substances were also prone to truancy. Males who engaged in physical fights and females who were physically attacked were more likely to be truant.

Summary: The study found that the prevalence of truancy among adolescents in Tanzania is relatively high and is associated with factors such as hunger, grade, fighting, being attacked, and feeling lonely. There is a need for school-based interventions, such as school feeding programs, to reduce hunger among Tanzanian students, as well as addressing other predisposing factors like loneliness through counseling. School authorities should also enforce strict controls to address attacks and fighting in order to reduce truancy.
