Motivational and myopic mechanisms underlying dopamine medication-induced impulsive-compulsive behaviors in Parkinson's disease

Andrew Dawson et al.

Summary: Dopaminergic medications can induce impulsive-compulsive behaviors in Parkinson's disease patients. However, the neurocognitive implications of this are unclear. A study was conducted on PD patients with and without ICBs, revealing heightened incentive motivation, choice impulsivity, and reactive aggression in those with ICBs.

Impulsivity traits and awareness of motor intention in Parkinson's disease: a proof-of-concept study

Fabio Giovannelli et al.

Summary: The study found that impulsive personality traits in Parkinson's disease patients are associated with a delayed awareness of motor intention, resulting in a shorter interval for conscious veto of impending actions. This characterization of the temporal profile of awareness of motor intention could be useful in identifying PD patients at risk of developing impulse control disorders during dopaminergic treatment.

Validation of a short Italian version of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-15) in non-clinical subjects: psychometric properties and normative data

Gianpaolo Maggi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS) in the Italian general population and provide normative data for clinical use. The results indicated that the shortened version of the BIS (BIS-15) showed almost identical psychometric properties as compared to the original scale, with reliable internal consistency and good convergent and divergent validity. The study also explored the influence of demographic variables on the BIS score and provided adjusting factors and a sensitive cutoff. The findings provide valuable insights for identifying individuals with clinical interest in impulsivity.

Impulsivity Trait Profiles in Patients With Cerebellar Ataxia and Parkinson Disease

Tiffany X. Chen et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the differences in impulsive traits between individuals with cerebellar ataxia (CA) and Parkinson's disease (PD). The results showed that impulsivity in CA is primarily driven by nonplanning traits, while individuals with PD exhibit higher impulsivity across the nonplanning, attentional, and motor domains.

Early Parkinson's Disease Phenotypes Tailored by Personality, Behavior, and Motor Symptoms

Bruna Meira et al.

Summary: Personality traits in de novo Parkinson's disease (PD) patients were found to be low novelty seeking, high harm avoidance, and normal reward dependence and persistence scores. Harm avoidance was positively correlated with depression, anxiety, and apathy severity, and negatively correlated with quality of life. Novelty seeking, reward dependence, and persistence were negatively correlated with apathy. Classification of patients based on personality and PD symptoms revealed three distinct clusters of patients.

Limbic hypoconnectivity in idiopathic REM sleep behaviour disorder with impulse control disorders

Ana Marques et al.

Summary: Research compared brain alterations in the reward system between idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) patients, healthy controls, and PD patients, finding differences in volumetric and functional connectivity characteristics, particularly in relation to hypersexuality. The presence of impulse control disorders (ICDs) correlated with altered functional connectivity within the reward system.

Neurophysiological Correlates of Trait Impulsivity in Parkinson's Disease

Lucia Ricciardi et al.

Summary: The study found a link between trait impulsivity and alpha power in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), regardless of the presence or severity of impulsive compulsive behavior disorders (ICB). Electrode contact pairs with the highest alpha power tended to be more ventral, while those with the highest beta power localized to the dorsolateral motor subthalamic nucleus (STN).
