Hiding and seeking: Children's lived experiences during COVID-19

Donna Koller et al.

Summary: This qualitative study examined the perspectives and lived experiences of school-age children during COVID-19, focusing on child rights issues. Through open-ended, virtual interviews with twenty children aged 7 to 12, hermeneutic analysis revealed that children's right to play and education were severely compromised as they navigated between the world of adult public health restrictions and their childhood. Despite facing challenges and missing out on certain childhood opportunities, children demonstrated their competence as social agents and responsible citizens. Future pandemic planning should prioritize policies and practices that strike a balance between public health needs and the protection of children's rights.
