A third transition in science?

Stuart A. Kauffman et al.

Summary: Classical and quantum physics have relied on the Newtonian paradigm since Newton, which involves identifying the relevant variables of the system, formulating laws of motion connecting these variables, defining boundary conditions to create the phase space, and integrating differential equations to determine trajectories within this space. However, the diachronic evolution of ever-new adaptations in a biosphere cannot fit within this paradigm, as living cells adaptively construct new possibilities outside the scope of definable phase space. Unlike engineering, the emergent creativity of an evolving biosphere cannot be fully understood or predicted through mathematics or set theory.

Small-molecule autocatalytic networks are universal metabolic fossils

Joana C. Xavier et al.

Summary: Life and the genetic code are self-referential. Autocatalytic networks made of simpler, small molecules are also self-referential. The study found reflexively autocatalytic food-generated networks in prokaryotic metabolic networks, indicating the prevalence of molecular reproduction in the universe and suggesting a potential origin for a primordial information-processing system.
