Hero or villain? The financial system in the 21st century

Jan Libich et al.

Summary: Finance plays a complex role in socioeconomic development, with a well-developed financial system having a positive impact on people's prosperity. However, an excessively large and poorly regulated financial system can have negative consequences. Modern finance has shifted from hero to villain in the past four decades, but policy reform proposals could potentially restore its status as a hero.

World Profit Rates, 1960-2019

Deepankar Basu et al.

Summary: This study presents estimates of the world (net) profit rate and the world (gross) profit rate using country-level and industry-level data, respectively. The results show a negative linear trend in both profit rates, driven by a decline in the output-capital ratio. A World Profitability Dashboard has also been created for researchers to access the data.
